The only thing more awkward than getting fired from your job is quitting your job. No one really wants to have that conversation or write that email. And what are you supposed to say, anyway? "I'm overworked, underpaid, hate all of you, and wish I could erase the last two years of my life?" Standard protocol for leaving a job just makes things uncomfortable for everyone and doesn't really leave room to discuss actual concerns. So, one woman decided she'd take a different route.
This Disgruntled Nurse Decided To Take A Different Approach To Quitting Her Job
#1 Sarah Childers, a former nurse at Western State Hospital in Lakewood, Washington,
had a Walmart vanilla sheet cake delivered to Forensics Ward 2, informing her employers of her departure.
#2 The cake was frosted with pink and white icing. Oh, and "Swing shift: I <3 you!"
Then, beneath the message to her coworkers she wrote, "Western State Hospital: I QUIT!!" and signed her name, adding that this was her "official notice."
"I kind of just wanted to laugh with everybody again when I left," Childers told KOMO-TV.
#3 Frankly, it sounded like she'd earned the right to quit by cake
Childers only lasted seven months on the job, but had concerns almost immediately after starting. "It's such a large institution. It could do so much so good, but it's just one of the worst places right now," she said.
#4 She claims that staff aren't given sufficient quality training and that managers focus on writing up mistakes and punishments.
Then, there's the issue of low pay and long hours.
"How do we control the population with such little staff and so many patients? And you can't have individualized treatment that way," Childers said.
#5 Childers said her former coworkers appreciated the ridiculous resignation notice / goodbye cake.
It was a fun way to send her coworkers some goodbye dessert and voice her opinion. "I'm not the kind of person who is going to shut up and I'm not the kind of person who's going to not do anything," Childers said.
#6 Obviously we're wondering how Childers' employer reacted to the cake.
The Huffington Post reached out to the hospital and got this in response:
This was quite likely the most unique ‘letter' of resignation ever submitted to Western State Hospital. Meanwhile, we thank the 2,000 dedicated staff members who do come to work day and night because they find it both challenging and rewarding to help our patients on their journey to recovery.
...We're guessing they're not too thrilled with this new publicity. Still, we're definitely team Childers.
#7 Childers has some stiff competition for 'best way to quit a job.'
May we never forget this lovely gentlemen who quit his job (dressed as a banana) with the help of a mariachi band.
