A high school principal in NC has caused an outrage in her local community and on social media after suspending an honor roll student for the remainder of the school year. She has also banned her from the school's graduation day ceremonies for what she says is a violation of the school’s dress code.

That's right, it's yet another case of a seemingly innocent person being screwed over by a dress code that stifles personal freedom. In this case, it really is a huge overreaction on the principal's part.

Hickory Ridge High School principal, Michelle Cline, suspended a teenage girl, who is only identified as Summer, after an incident at the school caused her to be singled out by the principal. NBC Charlotte reports that Summer wore a green shirt that exposed some of her shoulders and collar bone. This was apparently enough to earn the ire of principal Cline.

Summer says that principal Cline approached her while she was having lunch and questioned her. She asked if she brought a jacket to which Summer replied that she thought her shirt was fine. Nevertheless, Summer still borrowed a jacket from a friend to appease Cline. Summer says that even after borrowing a jacket and zipping it up, Cline insisted that she go change her entire outfit.

Summer says that she and the principal have never really gotten along. Over the years they have had several issues leading to Summers mom kindly asking the school to contact her before they take any action to discipline her. After Cline told Summer to go change, she said: "I apologize, I can't go anywhere with you unless my mom is called."

When Cline nor Summer could reach her mother through the phone, the situation made a turn for the worse and got totally out of hand. Summer says that she went to an assembly after she could not reach her mom and figured all would be okay. Then Cline came into the room and ordered every student to leave. Well everyone except Summer. This time she had the school security with her as a backup.

Summer says that this is when Cline told her: "I'm gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you."

Yes, you read that right, arrest a teenage girl over a freaking shirt.

Summer says: “I stayed in my seat just like a lot of role models that I have looked up to stayed in their seats. I mean, you have to stand up for what you believe in.” Cline then ordered the security guard to arrest her but at that moment her mom finally called back.

Summer would eventually go change but she was handed a 10-day suspension and barred from any and all senior activities, this includes graduation. Cline is said to be considering expelling Summer completely which would place her scholarships and academic accolades in harm's way.

Summer says: “It’s just sad because I worked so hard for four years to walk across that stage. We have drug dealers walking across that stage, we have sex offenders walking across that stage, and then the 4.4 student who showed her shoulders can’t. This is my life; I’m on a premed track. A full ride means so much, and that is on the line right now.”

The official reason given for her suspension was “insubordination,” not a dress code violation.

Once the media got wind of the story, it wasn't long before people were coming to Summers side. Many people shared screenshots of emails they sent to principal Cline and the school board.

#12 More than one person say Cline's act as an abuse of power.

#13 I think it is safe to say that most people feel like Cline is definitely in the wrong.

#14 A former student even weighed in on the matter while sharing her firsthand experience with Cline.

Summer worked hard to maintain a 4.4 GPA and her hard work paid off in the form of a full scholarship to one of the major universities but now she is worried that she may lose out on the chance due to Clines pettiness. Hopefully, Summer can work this all out and leave it in the past while heading towards a bright future. We wish you the best young lady.
