Sleep is something that humans require to survive. Whether or not it is to just let your body recover and heal or to engage in the warm, comfy clouds that are your pillows and mattress, sleep is something that a lot of humans (and other animals) hold dear to them. And the mental benefits are just as good as the physical ones, getting to relieve stress, giving the brain some time to rest and probably the most fun of all; visiting your vast subconscious mind that is the dream world.
While many believe that 8 hours is the ideal amount of time one should sleep, what is truly the definition of ‘good sleep’ and how can one acquire it?
Read on to find out the exact times you should be going to bed.
The common conception has been that getting 8 hours is what dictates if you will arise sharp and energetic.
But the truth is that the quality of sleep is what is actually most important.
Many of us have experienced lying in bed, counting the hours of sleep we are going to get as time ticks by.
On those nights it is almost guaranteed that our quality of sleep will be sub par since we are stressed out and worried about our sleep.
Many factors can affect your quality of sleep including what you eat, the amount of ‘screen time’ prior to bed, and activities performed before bed.
But there is something called the ‘Sleep Calculator’ that can help measure when you need to go to bed if you need to be up at a certain time.
This calculator is based on the body’s circadian rhythm. This is usually split up into 5 or 6 sleep cycles that usually last 90 minutes long.
A quote on the Sleep Calculator website reads:
‘Getting a good night’s sleep is about more than simply going to bed early—it’s about waking up at the right time too. Using a formula based on the body’s natural rhythms, the Sleep Calculator will work out the best time for you to rise or go to sleep.’
If you need to be up at 7 am then the optimal time to get to bed is at either 9:46 pm or 11:16 pm.
If you tend to stay up late then the best time to hit the snooze button would be 12:46 am or 2:16 am.
These times are set around the body’s sleep cycle composed of 5 to 6, 90-minute intervals throughout the night.
These times also take into the account the average 14 minutes required to fall asleep.
Things such as a warm shower, a warm beverage, or simply winding down with a book can do wonders in the improvement of the quality of your sleep.
If you have to wake up at 6 am, then going to bed at 8:46 pm or 10:16 pm would be best.
And if you happen to be a night owl then getting to bed at 11:46 pm or 1:16 am would be optimal for a 6 am wake up.
