He said,

“The initial concept was to lay out an image comprised of bottle caps, Then reality set in and we opted for the much easier gradient effect.”

He used the ROYGBIV sequence, which stands for the colours that make up the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Just deciding on the pattern and arranging the caps took them about 4 hours.Once the pattern was set, and the caps arranged, the entire layer of arrangement was covered with 5 layers of epoxy resin.

Originally, Chris had been planning on creating a design with the bottle caps, but it proved too difficult because they had uneven amounts of different colours, like a lot of black and very little blue.

So instead, they opted for a simple colour gradient.

The caps were lined up by colour and carefully arranged so it appeared that the colours were “blending” into one another.

Some of the caps, like the ones with messages printed on the inside, were flipped over so the messages could be read.

The epoxy was applied in several thin layers, rather than a thick one.It took ~5 layers to thoroughly cover the caps

“Visually, we felt it would be more interesting dispersing various caps to add pops of colour”

“Here you can see how we laid them out allowing the caps to “flow” into each other, rather than having hard colour stops”

“I am so proud of this project. It is a real conversation piece and we did it together, true DIY”

When the epoxy dried and cured, the counter was ready to use, and it added so much colour and personality to the room.
