Things don't always work out the way you want them to.

Adrian Pearce has a pretty strange ritual that all started 47 years ago. Pearce was madly in love with his girlfriend Vicki back in 1970 and truly believed that they would be together forever. Sadly, Vicki didn't feel the same way.

The start of a 47-year ritual.

On the day that Vicki gave Pearce the gift that would become the basis of his yearly ritual she broke up with him leaving him heartbroken. Understandably upset by what just happened, he went home and stormed through the house, throwing the gift under the Christmas tree.

Looking back on that day, Adrian told CBC: "She gave me a present at the same time and I took the present home. I had a long walk home and I was all upset and angry, and all the things you feel when somebody breaks up with you, So I fired the present under the Christmas tree. After my family opened their gifts at Christmas, there was still one Christmas gift left and it’s the gift this girl Vicki had given me. I told my family I’m never going to open that present."

There was a chance meeting.

Years later, Adrian would end up meeting Vicki again. He quickly realized that he was no longer interested in her and she felt the same. Despite the mutual unattraction, he held onto the present.

He's held onto that gift for nearly 50 years.

Jump ahead to 2017 and Pearce still has the gift. It has started to show wear and tear from years of being moved around but he still placed it under his tree nearly every Christmas since.

Adrian finally moved on.

After a few more years, Adrian eventually moved on and got married. Even after doing so he still placed the present under the tree each year. That is until his wife finally had enough and told him to knock it off.

His kids want him to open it.

Along with his wife, his kids also stepped in to urge him to stop his ritual. They have begged him to open the gift and be done with it but he has refused. Adrian doesn't put the gift under the tree anymore but he still looks at it each year with fond memories. He does often ponder what might be inside the decaying package but resists opening it.

He's tried to reach out to Vicki.

Instead of just opening the package like a normal person, Pearce has instead tried reaching out to Vicki so that she can tell him what's actually inside of it. So far he hasn't been able to get in contact with her.

Adrian said: "I kept it initially because I guess I had hopes that we would get back together and open it together. Now it’s just become a habit after 47 years of looking at it and having the pleasure of not opening it. Maybe I don’t want to know what’s inside it. It’s more exciting right now not opening the thing."

Adrian, while the sentiment of what you're doing is nice we have a piece of advice for you:

There has only been one time in the last 47 years that he almost gave in and opened the gift but he decided against it. Now, almost 50 years after the fact, he is thinking about having a competition to see if anybody can actually guess what's inside the package. Our guess is it's some lame 70's card.
