The bizarre procedure.

Chinese barber, Xiong Gaowu, has been recorded doing a bizarre eyeball shaving procedure for a customer who requested it. Apparently, in China, this eye-watering treatment is a traditional way of cleaning your eye. Along with styling hair, Gaowu uses a razor blade to clean customers eyes. He claims that it gets rid of dirt that is trapped around your eye.

The whole thing takes about 5 minutes from start to finish. You can see Gaowu making sure the blade is sterile at the beginning of the video. Next, he pulls the man's eyelid back in order to expose as much of the eye as possible before he starts working his magic.

He has an age limit.

He then takes the blade and slowly 'cleans' they eyeball by scratching the surface.

Gaowu has been doing this for more than 40 years. Most of his customers are older. He says that he only does the treatment for those who are over 30 because young people don't have as much dirt around their eyeballs.

He's one of only a few.

The longtime barber is one of only a few that are allowed to do the procedure as there is a lack of younger people interested in performing it.

A local news source reported that around 60 years ago the practice was regularly done as a way to treat trachoma. This disease is highly infectious and causes the eyelids to become rough.

It's very risky.

Even when done by someone as experienced as Gaowu, it's still a risky procedure. All it would take is one slip up to completely blind someone so extreme care is taken when performing the procedure.

Some people don't care about the risk and regularly show up to have the procedure done to them. If you're interested in seeing how it's done, take a look below.
