This Mom Is Furious At School Who Pulled Out Her Child’s Teeth Without Permission

Nobody likes the dentist. Some people are flat out terrified of going while others feel the general discomfort of having someone looking at you that closely and with so many pointy metal things.
For this poor child, his feelings towards the dentist were not helped at all when his school spontaneously removed three of his teeth without his mother’s permission or even painkillers to deal with the aftermath. To make matters worse, the surprise surgery caused nine-year-old Michael Flemming to miss the bus and he had to walk home!

A mother from Baltimore was outraged when her son came home with three of his teeth missing. The third grader cried during the agonizing procedure that happened at a school dental program. Shanda Flemming, mother of 9-year-old Michael, said that she was not notified that they were going to pull his teeth out.

According to CBS Baltimore, the school said Flemming signed a permission slip. All the while she thought the slip was just for a routine dental cleaning.
The dentist appeared to have pulled out two teeth on one side and one on the bottom. She became even more furious after she found out that her son had to miss the bus because of the long procedure. Michael had to walk almost a mile in pain with a swollen mouth just to get back home.

Flemming said in an interview with WJZ "I'm angry about this. I don't think that it should have happened like that."
Fox News reported that dental programs have been common in public schools because of an incident that happened in 2007. It was reported that a boy from Prince George's County died from an infected tooth.

In her disbelief she said, "I just don't understand how a school or a company can take it in their hands to do something like this to a child." Fleming is not the only one seeking answers.

Michael’s school have said that Shandra signed the permission slip for the procedure, though she maintains that it was supposed to only be a routine teeth cleaning session.

'They just said they was gonna clean my teeth,' Michael said.
His mother says she was never informed that her son would be having such extreme dental work.

When asked why the mother was not alerted and why the boy was allowed to walk home alone and why was he not given medication after the procedure, Baltimore Public Schools declined to give comments to news stations about the incident.
They cited it was due to HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) and privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. But they do still have a signed consent for dental services on file for Michael Flemming.

This concerning behavior has led to a lot of questions. Why were Michael’s teeth removed without informing his mother first? Why wasn’t he given any pain medication? Why did the school allow him to walk home alone?
