These micro realistic tattoos by South Korean tattoo artists do what art does best; give a message.
Tattooing in South Korea is an illegal art form. Thousands of tattoo artists however can be found across the country.
One such artist that has gained fame over social media is Dokhwa. She started tattooing a few years ago and quickly rose to fame.
Her signature style is that of microrealism where she depicts pets, loved ones and portraits onto skin.
Dokhwa’s beginnings were rather simple. “This looks really fun and I’m going to try it.”, she said.
But working in a country where her work is illegal posed a lot of challenges.
Not only is she working against local laws she also faces social criticism as many people look down on it.
Dokhwa got started under the tutelage of a mentor who taught her how to tattoo.
After experimenting with a few different styles, she specialized in micro-realism.
With the small canvas that she works on, adding details to these works of art can be difficult.
Dokhwa’s work however speaks for itself.
