History is a vast subject to be sure. And with so little time to cover it all, plenty of things get swept aside in favor of the bigger stories like World War II and the Louisiana Purchase. Those things are certainly interesting stories, but they’ve got nothing on these wacky facts we dug up.

#1 Electric Chair
A dentist is actually the one who invented the electric chair in an attempt to find a more humane way to put people, and dogs, to death. Dr. Alfred P. Southwick, from Buffalo, New York released his invention on January 1, 1889 and 8 months later, on August 6, 1890, William Kemmler became the first person to be killed this way. "There is the culmination of ten years work and study! We live in a higher civilization from this day."
#2 Suicide Attempt
When Elvita Adams leaped from the Empire State Building, attempting to end her life, fate intervened. A strong gust of wind happened to blow at just that time, blowing her onto the floor below, instead of her body dropping all the way to the ground. She only suffered a fractured hip.

#3 Luckiest Man Ever
An Australia men died and came back to life. That's lucky enough, but then he won the lottery. His luck continued when a tv station askd him to re-enact scratching a lottery ticket, and that ticket was a winner, too.
#4 Grandchildren Still Alive
The grandsons of our 10th president of the United States were still alive in 2015. President John Tyler was born in 1790.

Violet Jessop became known as Miss Unsinkable after having been on both the Titanic and Brittanic sinkings, and on the Olympic crash into another ship. Oddly enough, she continued to work for White Star Line and other oean liners before she died in 1971 of congestive heart failure at the age of 83.
