In the aftermath of JFK’s assassination, the 25th Amendment was ratified to set out a clear process for presidential succession. The amendment makes it very straightforward. It states: "The Vice President shall become President if the President is removed from office, dies, or resigns."
In the event of Trump’s death, this means Vice President JD Vance would be sworn in right away. The public would only be told after this step takes place. Once confirmed, flags across the nation would be lowered to half-staff for at least 30 days, as is tradition.
After assuming the presidency, Vance would be tasked with selecting a new vice president. However, his choice would only take effect if approved by a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
If, for some reason, the vice president could not step into the presidency, the line of succession would continue. The Speaker of the House, who is currently Mike Johnson, would be next to take on the role of president.
