The internet can be a dark and scary place, but sometimes, social media works in mysterious and heartwarming ways.

When a Twitter user who goes by the name Lewis decided to insult girls on Instagram who are nice to each other (seriously, my dude?), he might have expected some people to get angry. But it's safe to assume that he probably didn't expect them to react by paying each other a ton of compliments in his mentions — and that's exactly what went down.

For now, let's put aside the fact that this is a really weird thing to get mad at, and focus on the sheer gold that's going on in the replies.

It all started when Twitter user @sayanorton_ who completely disagree with his opinion found a wholesome way to shut him down. This tweet racked up a staggering 44,000 likes.

Another person popped into the thread to compliment her lipgloss, in a tweet that has since gained nearly 25,000 likes, completely ignoring Lewis's initial tweet altogether.

From there, the previous poster added, "Girl you’re one to talk. Look at your skin, GLOWING."

It’s hard to deny how heartwarming it is to see strangers complimenting each other instead of trashing one another on social media. But it turns out, not everyone is a fan of that.

The rest, as they say, was history. Soon other Twitter users — seemingly all strangers — flocked to the tweet to shower each other with compliments. "I can’t deal with how perfect your eyeliner wings are 😩😍🙌🏼," one person wrote. "Both of you have amazing brows 😍," another said to the two original girls in the thread.

From thenceforth, the floodgates of compliments opened, with thousands of Twitter users - who presumably have never met in real life - writing praiseworthy comments to one another and asking about each other’s beauty regimes.

“Oh man, you in your cover photo makes me swoon. That is such a beautiful colour on you,” added another.

Thousands of responses later, it transpired that Lewis’ original tweet had been completely forgotten, with the responses from women taking centre stage.

“Everyone commenting positivity in this thread is absolutely beautiful!” wrote one person.

“I think girls need MORE of that not less !!” added another.

“For too long it’s all been competitive between girls, there should be more kindness, compliments and solidarity. Especially between strangers. God knows men see each other and just instantly start being friendly.”

What started as a mean-spirited jab turned into something altogether empowering, which is inspiring in and of itself. And, for the record, you don't have to know someone personally to pay them a compliment — and you never know how much impact a few kind words can make.
