Uvalde school shooting footage was released last week and the heartbreaking 77 minutes of the footage showed the lack of response by the cops during the time the 18-year-old shooter caused a rampage in the school. However, one officer who drew the most criticism was the one who was seen in the footage continuously checking his phone. But recent reports reveal the reason why the officer was checking his phone continuously and it is heartbreaking.
The cop who was caught on the phone checking his phone faced a lot of backlash and now an explanation has been given for it.
As the CCTV footage went viral which showed a cop checking his phone, many people pointed out that he had a Punisher logo as his lock screen.
Some called out the irony of a police officer supporting the defiant Marvel vigilante even though he was seemingly doing nothing to stop a gunman killing children and teachers.
Podcast host Albert Jaragua Corado wrote on social media: "That cop in Uvalde having his lock screen be the punisher logo and him being scared to take on an active shooter is truly the perfect encapsulation of how cops see themselves vs who they really are."
But the reality behind the incident is much sadder than we imagined.
The officer has been named as Ruben Ruiz and his wife, Eva Mireles, was one of the two adult victims in the shooting.
KBTX reports Eva called Ruben to reveal she had been shot by the gunman and was slowly bleeding out in one of the classrooms at Robb Elementary.
One of the men involved in the investigation into the police response to the shooting has made the revelation in an attempt to stop the social media pile on of Ruiz.
Joe Moody, an El Paso Democrat and member of the Texas House of Representatives committee, told everyone that 'context matters'.
“I couldn’t say nothing seeing this man, who’s lost everything, maligned as if he was indifferent or actively malicious,” he said on Twitter.
"To those who haven’t bothered to read even the news that’s been reported in your rush to judgment, he attempted to engage but was removed from the building and disarmed.
"We’ll have much to say about the police response, but no criticism of this officer.”
According to KBTX,Eva was alive by the time the school shooting was over, but she passed away on her way to the hospital.
The leaked 77 minutes of video footage of the incident showed what happened in the elementary school at the time of the shooting. It does not contain any images of children
The footage has gained a lot of criticism towards police officers as many believe that the cops made the wrong decision of not entering the classrooms when the shooting was happening.
After watching the footage, majority public is of the opinion that the police did not do enough to save the lives of children.
There had been a 40 minute gap of time between the police unit arriving at Robb Elementary School and storming into the classroom.
This is the husband of teacher Eva Mireles, who contacted him on his phone from her classroom while he was on-scene to say that she’d been shot and was dying. 1/2#txlege #Uvalde pic.twitter.com/C7m64uBmaQ
