After a nearly two-hour standoff, police took Hodges out of his Buffalo, NY house on a stretcher so they could bring him to VA Western New York Health Care System to have his mental health assessed. Johnnie is being evicted due to owing M&T over 75,000 in loan repayment due to caring for his sick and elderly wife who has passed 2 years prior. Caring for his wife and other expenses left him penniless, and the bank wanted the veteran evicted.

Hodges served in World War II. He's a Navy veteran, but above all else the 90-year-old is a devoted husband. Johnnie's late wife, Flora was struggling with Alzheimer's in 2014.
M&T Bank rented four storage units for Hodges' belongings. It paid the first two months of storage, leaving Johnny with another debt.

Johnnie personally cared for his wife of 60 years, who was suffering from Alzheimer's, and never told his children that he was struggling financially. In his efforts to care for her, he became delinquent on loan payments. After Flora passed away, Johnnie was still in debt and thus, evicted from the home he and his wife shared for 60 years.

He was forcibly removed by police officers strapped into a stretcher and taken away. Many felt the elderly veteran's situation was not handled justly. People from all over the world donated more than #110 thousand dollars to help get Johnny's home back.

It became a community even to help the veteran get his home back, and his dignity. Johnnie is grateful to be back at home and said he plans to never leave. "There's no place like home. I am so grateful that I am back to stay. And I am never leaving again!"

His daughter told reporters she is grateful to the entire community and those who donated money for her father. She thanks those who recognize his valor and compassion for his wife, and is happy that Johnnie can now live in peace.
