Each time I think I have a decent comprehension of the world, I discover another reality that flips my entire impression of learning on its back.

Betty White is older than sliced bread
America's sweetheart was born in 1922, just six years before the Chillicothe Baking Company sold the very first loaf of sliced bread on July 7, 1928. As great as sliced bread is, it has nothing on Betty White. In 2010, the USDA Forest Service made White an honorary forest ranger, and a 2011 poll revealed White to be the most popular and trusted celebrity among Americans. Everyone loves Betty!

As a general public, we take a greater number of pictures in two minutes today than were taken in the whole 19th century.Since photography has emerged at the beginning of the 1800s, the number of pictures taken each year increased exponentially to reach a boom in photography at the end of the 20th century.
In the year 2000, we took 85 billion photos (2500 frames per second) and this figure continues to increase with the appearance of new digital technologies. Today, there are more than 2.6 billion mobile phones fitted with cameras in the world and it was even revealed that there was in one month a receipt of 6 billion photographs on Facebook.
Indeed, according to the statistics today, every two minutes, we take as many photos as these taken throughout the 19th century.

Eskimos also use refrigerators to keep food from freezing. But why would they if they live in below-zero temperatures? There are more fake flamingos on the planet than genuine ones.
Plastic flamingos are widely considered to be the stereotypical example of lawn kitsch the American's answer to garden dwarfs. Designed in 1957 by Don Featherstone while working for Union Products, the pink flamingo has gone from a piece of Florida exotica to a symbol of trash culture. Featherstone sculpted his 3-D flamingos from clay, working from photos of the birds in National Geographic.
The species stopped replicating when manufacturer Union Products went out of business on November 1, 2006. However, Faster-Form Corporations now purchased the copyright and plastic molds of Featherstone's original plastic flamingos and will be resuming production in order to save the plastic flamingos from extinction.

Falling coconuts cause about 150 deaths annually. You know, while you were keeping an eye on the sharks.
There are no reliable records on this subject but it is estimated that every year about 150 people dies as a direct cause of this. This number isn't as high as it could be if it is taken into account that there are millions of people living amongst palm trees but, take note, it's still ten times higher than the number of people who die each year from shark attacks!
