Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the greatest football players of all time. But many people also dislike the Manchester United player because of his very confident and seemingly arrogant persona.

Few, however, know of Ronaldo's softer side and his dedication to charity work. For example, in 2015 Ronaldo was named the world's most charitable sportsperson. Some of his most charitable acts include auctioning off his 2013 Ballon d'Or trophy for $775,000 to donate the proceeds to the Make-A-Wish foundation, funding the construction of a pediatric hospital in Chile, and even paying for the cancer treatment of a 9-year-old fan.

He is known across the globe for his incredible performances on the football pitch, but his lack of tattoos points to some of the other amazing work he does. Not even one small tattoo hidden away in a discrete part of his body. Nothing. While it may seem surprising to some, there’s a very good reason behind this. And no, it’s not because he’s scared of needles.

In an early interview with the Italian news website Diretta, Ronaldo said: "I don't have tattoos so that I can donate blood more often."

While people with tattoos can still donate blood, they can only do it after at least four months of receiving new ink, according to the Red Cross. This is because of the risk of infection. The same rule also applies to piercings or permanent makeup.

"One donation can help three people who are urgently in need of treatment."

In 2012, Ronaldo helped one of his former teammate, Carlos Martins’s son, who was suffering from a serious illness, leukaemia; he was desperately in need of a bone marrow donation.

Without hesitation, Ronaldo volunteered: "He told us about the problem with his son and the group decided to help this boy. (…) Many people think that it’s difficult to give bone marrow but it’s not, it’s really not that different from a classic blood test."

Ronaldo is also registered as a bone marrow donor. "I did it many years ago and if I had to do it again, I would, because this is a very serious disease for many children and we need to help them...It's a simple process and then you feel happy because you know you are helping another person," he once said.

"It doesn't cost anything, it's a simple process and then you feel happy because you know you are helping another person," he continued.

Ronaldo encouraged more people to become blood donors with a campaign launched in partnership with Abbott in 2015, saying at the time we can 'all make a difference by donating blood'.

"Each donation can benefit up to three people in emergency situations and for long-term medical treatments,” he continued. "That’s why I am enthusiastic to be partnering with Abbott to bring awareness to the importance of blood donation and to encourage people around the world to become lifelong blood donors and help save lives."

So while Ronaldo still fits the image of a typical football millionaire, his tattoo-less body appears to be proof he also uses his fame to make the world a little better.
