When you start giving an allowance to your children it's usually to help them understand some form of independence and how to deal with money growing up. In this case, however, the only lesson OP's kid learned was that their father can't be trusted.

Reddit user SugarRush599 decided to start giving money to her 10 y.o. son since her husband was unemployed and she wanted her son to have money to spend himself.

She was appalled however to find that the money she had been giving to her son was ending up in her husband's pocket.

her husband had been asking the son for money under the guise of spending it on their son but would buy cigarettes and booze with it instead.

Their son had been giving his father money so he could drive to the store for him. Since OP was working she never saw this occur.

The father would offer to buy Doritos or other snacks but would end up never getting them while also pocketing the money.

Not only did this go on for 2 months, but the dad also asked the son to not tell his mother. He promised to buy his things but ultimately never did. OP ended up in a fight with her husband over the situation.

What was even more surprising was that her husband didn't consider this a big deal. He considered the money to be 'gas money' that would be used driving to the supermarket.

OP was infuriated and accused him of being a thief that would steal from his own child.

She then decided to no longer give her son an allowance and that she would buy whatever her son needed herself.

This did not sit well with her husband who accused her of being controlling and that she was pushing their son for his actions. He also added that since she's working all the time, she wouldn't be able to handle that responsibility.

She told him to mind his own business but her husband refused to let the situation go.

Commenters were also shocked by the husband's actions and pointed out that the situation was much bigger than some missing money.

They even wondered why she remained married to her husband after being presented with major red flags.

Others were of the same opinion and encouraged her to open an account where only her son and she had access.

Other commenters reiterated that OP needed to end the relationship as this would be a major dealbreaker for them.
