A Belgian woman has been banned from visiting a zoo due to her affair with one of the chimpanzees.

Reportedly, one chimpanzee named Chita arrived at the Antwerp zoo some 30 years ago. Adie Timmermans has been visiting the zoo for the past 4 years and has developed a close relationship with the primate. Adie said:

I love that animal, and he loves me. I haven't got anything else. Why do they want to take that away. We're having an affair, I'll just say. Other dozens of visitors are allowed to make contact. Then why not me?

As per Newsweek, Adie's affair with the animal according to her involves the duo waving and blowing kisses to each other from opposite sides of the glass enclosure.

However, the zoo administration recently got worried about the close bond between Adie and the primate as according to them this bond is negatively affecting Chita's rapport with the zoo's other chimpanzees.

When Chita is constantly busy with visitors, the other monkeys ignore him and don't consider him part of the group, even though that is important. He then sits on his own outside of visiting hours.

An animal that is too focused on people is less respected by its peers. We want Chita to be a chimpanzee as much as possible.

Antwerp Zoo also denied that it had banned Adies, but said it had asked her to “change her behavior”.

A spokesperson told indy100:

“Every visitor can still visit and see Chita if they want, included Mrs. Timmermans.

“We only asked her to change her behaviour if Chita is near and she tries to catch his attention or the other way around.  Chita has to focus on the other chimpanzees as much as possible, he has to be part of the group for his own wellbeing.”

According to a Dutch daily newspaper De Gelderlander, Chita once used to be a pet but it came to the zoo some 30 years ago and since then it has had difficulty in settling into the zoo’s chimpanzee troupe and got into a fight with them in 2008.

“Because he is an exception, he was raised with humans and came to the ZOO almost 30 years ago, he is still fond of humans. But, for his own health, he has to be part of the chimpanzee group as much as possible,” the spokesperson added.

“We asked Mrs Timmermans to let him be a chimpanzee among chimpanzees and not to stay with him for too long nor attract his attention.

“We explained Mrs. Timmermans why we ask this from her (and all our visitors) and why it is better for Chita himself.  We hope she will do so in the future.”

The zoo is just concerned that Chita spends too much time with humans and so he has been shunned by other animals and spends most of the time sitting alone which is not good for him in the long run and so the zoo asked Adie for her cooperation.
