Arterial venous malformation (AVM) is a condition that causes unusual connections between blood vessels and can occur in many parts of the body. These vessels become tangled and can be life threatening.
A South Dakota woman, 28-year-old Jennifer Hiles, has had to deal with AVM most of her life. Her unique case of AVM has not only threatened her life medically, it has affected her life socially as a parent. Jennifer has facial AVM, leaving her with marks on her face that people in public ridicule while she's with her children.
Luckily, Jennifer has just had a surgical procedure aimed at correcting her facial AVM and the results are stunning!
SHARE Jennifer's story with your friends on Facebook. What a tough woman!
Here is Jennifer Hiles with her two daughters Marlina and Kiah.
The large masses on her face aren't actually a direct result of AVM but are caused by large medical balloons put in place to relieve some of the pain associated with the condition.
Jennifer has suffered from AVM since childhood but, at first, doctors believed she only had a large birthmark.
This all changed when she almost lost her life...
In an interview, Jennifer's mother Alfreda Simms said "She nearly died when she was 11 and had to be airlifted to the hospital. She was bleeding from her nose and lost a ton of blood."
In school, boys would only go on dates with her in private and she was also repeatedly bullied.
"I didn't realize that I was so different until my first boyfriend," she said in an interview. She added that "He would always talk to me, but then when we were in school, he would completely ignore me and talk to the pretty girls." It wouldn't be long until she found the man of her dreams, though.
In high school, Jennifer met Dustin Van Overschelde and it was a match made in heaven.
He told reporters that "I can see past her outside because she is so beautiful on the inside." Dustin, who Jennifer has had two children with, has decided to stand with his wife during these difficult medical circumstances.
Jennifer has undergone several procedures to correct complications from her condition and would soon undergo yet another
She would finally have a procedure done to take away the large balloons under her skin...
"I just want to be able to spend all of my time with my kids without people looking at me and calling me names," said Jennifer in an interview with Barcroft Media.
The balloons were put under Jennifer's skin not only to relieve pain but also to stretch the skin so that scar tissue can be covered during surgery.
Here she is having them inspected by her doctor.

Jennifer and Dustin were holding out hope that this would be the surgery that would finally allow her to live a comfortable life with her family.

Dustin and the children waited in anticipation.

Here she is after her latest surgery!
After she awoke from her surgery, she asked the doctor to see her face. "I asked him to take a picture of my face and I was so happy because my entire face was just white and it looked AVM-free and I just couldn't believe it was me," explained Jennifer.
This wasn't the end of the road for Jennifer, though...
Jennifer will undergo further procedures to thin her nose and reduce the severe scarring she still has on her face.
As it stands now, Jennifer's bleeding has almost completely stopped.
Jennifer is happy to be with her family and healthy but hopes that one day her scarring can be eliminated for good.
Unfortunately, it is likely that she will have to undergo future surgeries due to AVM. But she's all smiles for now.
She handles such a difficult situation with grace. You can see her video blogs on YouTube where she documents her life after surgery.

In a recent video blog post, she describes how she is starting to get recognized in public.
Her blog posts regularly get thousands of views and the family has certainly started to notice that her story is spreading.
She has some words of advice that she wants to spread to her audience as well...
She wants to her followers to know that sometimes things don't have to be perfect in life for you to be a happy person.
A follower told Jennifer that "I can't wait for all of your surgeries to be over so you can finally be happy." Jennifer followed up saying, "I'm totally happy, like, right now. I don't need for all of my surgeries to be over with and I don't need for them to go 100% perfectly well in order to be happy."
"People are always putting happiness out of reach somewhere," she added.
"We need to focus on being in the moment right now because right now is really all we have."
She speaks the truth.
We have a lot to learn from someone who has gone through this kind of ongoing health ordeal.
