The woman had a strange feeling about her doctor so she turned on her phone recorder which was hidden in her hair weave. When she played it back she was shocked at the behavior and comments used towards her while under anesthesia.
Woman Secretly Records Her Doctors Insulting Her During Surgery
#1 She Needed Emergency Surgery
Ethel Easter wanted nothing more than to see a doctor. She was is pain. A hiatal hernia had caused her to suffer more than a hundred abdominal attacks within 24 hours, her stomach was bruised, and she found blood in her urine. The pain was excruciating, so Easter prayed that a surgery could be scheduled as soon as possible.
#2 Doctors Refused To Operate Quickly
She was sent by her family practitioner to a specialist. The doctor who would be operating on her at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in Houston did not share her urgency for a quick operation. He told her she would have to wait two months. the 44-year-old Easter broke down and cried "I can't do this for two months. I can't do this anymore. "
#3 She Had To Wait A Full Month Before Surgery
‘Who do you think you are? You have to wait just like everybody else,'" Easter recalled the doctor telling her before her surgery. She said his attitude changed and he told her she was being "difficult" even though she was in visible pain. He sent her home with an appointment for one month later.
#4 She Had To Keep Her Appointment But Had red Flags
She was later informed by a different doctor during another visit that the surgeon had left "bad notes" in her file. Easter said at that point, a "red flag" went up. She said she didn't want to cancel or reschedule the surgery for later because she could not stand the pain any longer.
#5 She Snuck A Recorder Into The Operating Room
So she went ahead with the operation but she would sneak a recorder into the operating room so that her family could know what happened to her in case things went wrong. She had no idea what could go wrong, but she had a gut feeling that the doctor was not there to provide his best care.
#6 She Put The Device In Her Hair Extension
The audio recorder was the size of a USB drive and she placed it inside of her braided hair extensions. When she was changing into her hospital gown, she put her hair up in a ponytail and stuck the recorder inside. "I was fearful," Easter said. "I didn't know if I was going to come out of the surgery, so I just wanted my family to know if something went on."
#7 Right Away Doctors And Staff Began Saying Bad Things
On the recording, hospital staff could be heard calling her a "handful" and saying that she'd threatened to call a lawyer and file a complaint. Easter has said to news outlets that she'd never threatened to hire a lawyer but might have said she needed to file a complaint regarding the wait time for the surgery.
#8 They Made Fun Of Her Belly Button And Weight
Easter said that the nurses had laughed and made fun of her belly button and that at another point, someone had referred to her as Precious. On the recording, a surgeon could be heard saying, "Precious, yes. This is Precious over here, saying hi to Precious over there." They were comparing her to the overweight black girl in the film "Precious".
#9 Harris Health Refused To Apologize Or Give Support For Her Treatment
She sent the recording to the hospital and was hoping to get some sort of satisfaction over her ordeal. Harris Health System, which operates Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, said it could not comment on Easter's complaint. However, they did send Harris a letter telling her that the staff was reminded about the language they use in the operating room, and no further action would be taken. They did not apologize but thanked her for submitting the recording to them to help in their determination.
#10 She Is Thinking About Suing The Hospital
Easter told news agencies that she had not yet decided whether to sue the hospital or not. "They had no right to say those things over my body," she said. "It was unprofessional and it was wrong."
