We all know giraffes are the kings of the long necks. It was a shock to hear that a person took physical measures to make herself look like a giraffe.

Sydney Smith, 30 years old, was in the news a couple of years ago when she decided to deliberately stretch her neck to look like a giraffe, her favorite animal.

She had copper rings added to her neck in order to elongate it. She is self labeled as "the giraffe woman."

#4

Her decision was based on her love for the giraffe and her fascinations in the Kayan Lawhi tribes from Thailand and Burma who practiced the wearing of copper rings to elongate their necks.

After some time, the rings started to slowly stretch her neck. She added more rings to get it even longer.

She says she does not go anywhere without her giraffe purse. If you ask us, we think she just may be obsessed.

She currently lives in Los Angeles. Here she is posing with a fan in Hollywood. At one point, her neck was 11 inches long, but it is unclear hot long it actually extended since she was always adding more rings.

People have gone as far as creating a comic character of her. Sydnee things it is "So Rad!"

Over the last couple of years, Sydnee started having second thoughts. She grew weary of being defined as "the giraffe woman."

So, she decided to take the rings off once and for all after just five years of wearing them. She was really tired of her live revolving around them.

She said, "I spent five years of my life with rings around my neck and I just became very introverted and isolated and felt like the rings were taking over my life in every way,"

Since she wore the rings for so long, she had to undergo physical therapy to build the strength back up in her neck, and after some time, her neck began to shrink back to its normal size.

It almost seems like a waste of five years. We wonder if she still would have done it if she knew the effects would not be permanent.
