A woman who just won more than $70 million from Johnson & Johnson after alleging the company's baby powder caused her ovarian cancer said she cried "happy tears" when the jury's decision was announced.
"It's been a long-fought battle," said Deborah Giannecchini of Modesto, California, who was 59 when she was diagnosed in 2012. "I was just elated, so relieved it was over. I felt like I accomplished something. ... There were happy tears and just joy."
#1 Deborah Giannecchini was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012.
#2 She alleges that the cancer was caused by using baby powder in sensitive areas of her body.
#3 Ms. Giannecchini sued, alleging "negligent conduct" in marketing baby powder for such a use.
#4 Her trial recently concluded with a jury awarding her $70 million.
Johnson & Johnson plans to appeal this massive verdict.
#5 Ms. Giannecchini is not the only woman claiming that baby powder caused her cancer.
In total, about 2,000 women have come forward with similar claims against the company.
#6 There have also been two other massive awards against the company.
In St. Louis, Missouri, juries have awarded a $72 million verdict and a $55 million verdict, respectively.
#7 Lawyers allege that Johnson & Johnson has research dating back to the '70s showing the dangers of baby powder.
#8 The company strongly denies this, claiming their baby powder is perfectly safe.
#9 The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists talc (the main ingredient of baby powder) as "possibly carcinogenic."
This means more research is needed to fully understand these effects.
#10 It's clear that if you use baby powder, you need to be extremely careful.
