With any new film or TV show, producers want to break records for best critic reception. But unfortunately for the makers of Velma, the Scooby-Doo spin-off broke the records for becoming the worst rated animated series of all time on IMDb.

While touting itself as an 'original and humorous spin,' many fans believe the spin-off has strayed too far from the source material, with characters described as 'unlikeable' and 'oversexualized' teenagers.

Even though the premiere was HBO Max's most-watched launch for an original animated show, it garnered a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 11 percent on its premier. The latest two episodes have seen it fall even further to just 6 percent. On IMDB, the show has a 1.3/10 rating - making it the worst reviewed animated TV program ever.

The series stars Mindy Kaling as Velma, Constance Wu voicing Daphne, Sam Richardson doing the same for Shaggy and Glenn Howerton playing Fred.

The show's character descriptions highlight the differences in these new versions of the Scooby gang. The 'underappreciated brains' Velma is joined by Daphne (Constance Wu) - a popular mean girl orphan who deals drugs because of a dark family secret, Fred - a personification of mediocre white richness with 'teeny widdle privates' - and Shaggy, now known as Norville - a school nerd who worries he’s a beta male.

But for the first time in a Scooby-Doo series, Scooby is nowhere to be seen, which has left many fans disappointed. And since its release, many fans and film critics have been discussing their thoughts on social media through comments, memes and reviews published online. Here are some of the memes and Twitter comments:
