1. It has its own zoo license.

In fact, it is one of the only residential properties in LA that has such a license.

2. It isn't as wild as most people think.

Sure, we always hear about the epic parties thrown at the mansion, but rumor has it that the entire property is usually pretty quiet.

3. It wasn't always owned by Hefner.

Originally, the mansion was owned by a NASA employee Louis D. Statham who was also an acclaimed chess player. Hefner purchased the mansion for $1 million in 1971.

Not a bad investment.

4. The Playmates have to follow some pretty strict rules.

Apparently they have a curfew of 9 p.m.,and are often not allowed to have guests over. They are also granted an allowance of $1,000 each week.

5. The grotto isn't very clean.

Apparently the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health discovered several harmful bacterias in the grotto area of the mansion back in 2011.

6. There is a secret Elvis room.

Apparently there is a secluded room where the King used to spend many nights. However, this room is very rarely seen, making it all the more mysterious.

7. At one point, the carpets in Hefner's bedroom hadn't been changed in years.

8. Some pretty big celebrities have been banned from the mansion.

Luke Wilson was once banned for over a year after he tried to sneak a friend into the mansion with him.

9. There were rumors of secret tunnels.

Many believe that underground tunnels were built so that frequent celebrity guests could get to the mansion from their homes without being disturbed.

11. Apparently it's incredibly dirty.

In her book, former Playmate Izabella St. James says that the mansion is occupied with a lot of broken furniture and stained carpeting and mattresses.

12. Rumor has it that John Lennon once vandalized the mansion's artwork.

The story goes that Lennon took one of the original Matisse paintings off the wall, and put out his cigarette on it.
