15 Spooky Secrets About 'The Addams Family'

1. The producer got the idea to make the movie after he was in a van with a bunch of studio execs.

One of them randomly started humming The Addams Family theme song and everybody instantly joined in. The producer was convinced that there was enough interest in the show and the cartoon for him to pitch the idea of a movie! And you've started humming the theme song to yourself, right?

2. The Addams' house was actually built from scratch and it cost $100,000!

Not going to lie, I'd buy it. I probably wouldn't survive in that house alone but it'd be pretty cool to live there!

3. To make Anjelica Huston look more like the original Morticia in the TV show, the makeup artists had to do a lot of work.

They had to attach strings with spirit gum to the outside corners of her eyes. Then they anchored the strings on her head. Morticia is fab!

4. Wednesday seems like a random name, but it's actually a reference to the line in a Mother Goose poem.

The line says, "Wednesday's child is full of woe." Yup, that just about sums Wednesday up!

5. The set was plagued with problems and was haunted!

People got sick, people quit and the camera caught the moment when Raul Julia burst a blood vessel in his eye! The director said that he felt like "there was a pervasive black cloud hanging over the movie."

Fanaru 6. Gomez was supposed to have dark makeup around his eyes kind of like Fester but his look was deemed too scary by the studio execs.

His look was redesigned to give him a more "attractive appearance."

7. Anjelica had to go through a lot to look like Morticia. She wore a metal corset, had to get neck tucks and fake nails daily.

8. When Uncle Fester powers the light bulb with his mouth, that's a direct reference to the original TV show where he does the same thing.

9. Raul said that after the movie premiered, children would frequently recognize him in public. Raul said it always brings a smile to his face.

10. The splash of tar from the opening gag ends up being visible on the front of the Addams house throughout the rest of the movie.

11. Thing's wagon of "personal possessions" are all hand related things.

He has different types of gloves, handwear-themed catalogs, and notebooks!

12. In the TV show, Fester was actually Morticia's uncle so he technically wasn't an Addams.

However, they switched it for the movie so he was Gomez's brother and so he became Fester Addams. It's not the Addams family without Fester!

13. The actors were worried that Fester's storyline was confusing. Was it someone suffering from memory loss and looked like Fester?

Christina Ricci was the one that told the director to make sure Fester wasn't an imposter!

14. Believe it or not, Cher (yes, THE Cher) wanted to play the role of Morticia!

She definitely had the look down!

15. Tim Burton was originally set to direct since he had worked with the writers before.

Unfortunately, the contract fell through and Barry Sonnenfeld took over. But how cool would've it had been if Tim directed the movie? It's totally up his alley! Literally, all his movies are like this.
