A 16-year-old girl has been handed down a life sentence for killing a seven-year-old girl named Katie Rough in an alley near a park in York. She smothered young Katie to death before cutting her with a knife. She was sentenced to life for manslaughter and ordered to be held at least five years by a Leeds Crown Court Judge.

Katie was found in a field with several lacerations to her chest and neck and did not respond when rescuers attempted to revive her. The judge found out that her death was actually caused by the teenager smothering her.

The teenager was found in a York suburb carrying a bloody knife and covered in blood after she called 911 to report to the police what she had done. In court, it was argued that the teen had irrational beliefs and thought that Katie was a robot which prompted her attack.

The court learned that the teen had started suffering from mental health issues a year prior to the killing of Katie Rough. The prosecutor stated that the teen suffered from depression and delusional thoughts as well as self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

The teen reportedly said that she was convinced people were not humans. She thought they were robots. It was reported that when the teen was asked if she thought Katie was a robot that she got noticeably distressed. The barrister argued that the teen was driven by this irrational idea that people were in fact robots and that is what caused her hostile behavior towards the young girl.

The barrister also brought up a picture that the teen posted on her social media account just two days prior to the incident that contained a disturbing message. He called it a cry for help.
The teen girl denied murdering the young girl but plead to the lesser charge of manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
