An 81-year-old motorist was killed in a head-on collision while he driving on the wrong side of a major highway in northern Israel.

The incident, which took place on Highway 2 near the Olga Interchange north of Netanya, was caught on camera by a passenger in a car driving in the adjacent lane.

The passenger can be heard speaking to police on her phone, informing them of the car's location. Tragically, just seconds later the errant driver slams head-on into an approaching vehicle - a police patrol car that had been sent to locate him.

The driver - a resident of Emek Hefer - was killed instantly, while the police officer and city inspector in the patrol car were taken to Hadera's Hillel Yaffe hospital in moderate condition.

A Magen David Adom paramedic at the scene of the accident, Lior Elmkies, described the scene. "This was a serious traffic accident between two vehicles. From the intensity of the crash one of the cars went flying and flip over into the adjacent lane.

"The driver of the vehicle was left trapped and unconscious, with no pulse and not breathing, and with severe multi-system injuries. His death was confirmed at the scene."

"Two others who were in the second car - a young man aged 20 and a man aged 46 - were moderately injured and were transported by an intensive care vehicle to the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center," he added.
