Being a talented actor in Hollywood means being able to play any type of character. As it happens, there are a lot of openly gay stars that play straight characters, and they totally have us all fooled!
Of course, your sexuality definitely doesn’t define how well you play a specific role, but it’s pretty interesting to see some of our favorite celebs play some very convincing parts!
#1 Jane Lynch played Sue Sylvester on Glee for six seasons. Her character was not only very rough around the edges but was also straight.
Both very opposite of Jane in real life.
#2
Jane is actually openly a lesbian and was married to Lara Embry for three years before their divorce in 2014. She was also named one of the “10 Amazing Gay Women in Showbiz” by Power Up.
#3 When Ricky Martin was 23, he starred on General Hospital as a straight man.
Look at those locks!
#4
He came out as gay in 2010, and said “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”
#5 Ellen Page starred in Juno as a straight teenage girl who got pregnant. Nobody really questioned her sexuality, but she came out as gay in 2014.
#6
She spoke at the Human Rights Campaign’s “Time to Thrive” conference, and said, “I’m here today because I am gay. And because… maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time.”
#7 Kristen Stewart played Bella Swan in Twilight and was Robert Pattinson’s love interest in both the movies and real life.
The two broke up, and Kristen has announced that she’s now happily in a relationship with film producer Alicia Cargile.
#8 Neil Patrick Harris has starred in many roles where he plays a straight man. Most notably his role of Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother.
#9
He is actually a very openly gay man who is married to David Burtka. They have two children together (who are SUPER adorable, by the way).
#10 Sara Gilbert played Darlene Conner on Roseanne for nine years and even dated The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki in real life.
She then realized she was a lesbian, but didn’t publicly announce it until almost a decade later.
#11 Speaking of The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons plays the lovable Sheldon Cooper.
Of course, Sheldon is in one of the most awkward relationships ever with Amy Farah Fowler.
#12
In real life, Jim is openly gay and has been in a relationship with Todd Spiewak for ten years.
#13 If you’ve ever watched an episode of Frasier, you’d know that David Hyde Pierce’s character, Niles, was madly in love with Daphne.
David actually came out as gay in 2007 and has been now with his husband, Brian Hargrove, for over 20 years.
#14 T. R. Knight is best known for his character George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy.
He had a few female love interests on the show and was even married at one point.
#15
T.R.’s co-star, Isaiah Washington, was fired from the show for making homophobic remarks towards him. After the controversy, he came out publicly, and has been married to Patrick Leahy for three years now.
