As mothers, we all know what it’s like to need a break. From crying babies to whining toddlers to fighting siblings, it can all get to be a bit too much sometimes.
Most mothers will call in a sitter or wait for their husband or partner to arrive home before dashing out of the house faster than Usain Bolt running the 100m, but sadly for one 7 year old in Colorado, her mother didn’t call in anyone to look after her when she needed a break, and left her home alone with tragic consequences.
A 7 year old Colorado girl was found face down in her apartment complex pool after being left home alone.
Her mother, who left her and her 6 year old sister home alone while she went to Walmart for over an hour, will not face any charges at this time.
A man heard screams coming from the pool area and ran to find the young girl face down. He used a pool net to help get her out of the water, while another onlooker performed CPR.
The young girl was taken by paramedics to the local hospital but was unable to be saved.
The girls' mother, Eve Gbeugre initally told investigators she'd only left her girls alone for a few minutes, but later confessed she was gone for about an hour.
She said she left because her daughter "was not listening to her," and she "needed to step away" from both girls and that she "needed a break from the girls who were misbehaving," according to the Denver Post.
Julie Brooks of Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office told KDVR-TV they didn't think the girl was left at the pool.
"We believe the child was not initially at the pool that the child was left alone and found her own way to the pool."
There did not appear to be any adults in the pool area, and authorities don't know how long the young girl was in the pool before she was noticed, according to a local ABC affiliate.
Gbeugre was initially arrested on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death, but was released after it was decided that charges wouldn't be filed.
"Based on information made known to the District Attorney's Office, and in consultation with the Arapahoe County Sheriff, the District Attorney has determined that filing criminal charges against Eve Gbeugre would not be appropriate at this time, and therefore will not be filing criminal charges resulting from this arrest, and the District Attorney requests that Eve Gbeugre be released from custody," the DA said in a statement.
Gbeugre told authorities that she is pregnant and ran to her local Walmart to get some food, leaving her 6 and 7 year old daughters alone in her apartment.
She also told them her daughter knew where the pool key was located in their apartment.
