Mom is ‘blindsided’ after discovering 12-year-old live streaming in her bedroom to strangers around the world.
A Mom Was Shocked To See What Her 12-Year-Old Was Secretly Doing Online... From Her Home
#1 Mother Shocked At Daughters Live Stream
A Virginia mom says she is "blindsided" after finding out her 12-year-old daughter was live streaming in her bedroom to hundreds of strangers. Kelly Jarrett says she wants to alert other families to the dangers of live streaming, according to station WTVR.
Jarrett says she received a friend request on Facebook from a man she didn't know, then found out he was a viewer of her daughter's live streams.
#2 She Was Streaming Herself on YouNow And Received Messages From Adult Men
Jarrett discovered Emily, 12, was streaming a live feed on YouNow of herself in her bedroom giving advice to friends.
The stream reached people all over the world and amassed more than 400 comments.
Emily told her mother she was fully dressed and had never streamed anything sexual or out of the ordinary, but Kelly is worried that it may have gone further than she is being led to believe, based on the comments by adult men.
#3 Her Devices And Internet Privileges Revoked
Jarrett says she found comments from random men who complimented Emily's looks saying, "you are so beautiful, your eyes are so blue and pretty, your voice is so soothing."
"It scared me on levels that I did not want to be frightened on," Jarrett said. "Her devices have been taken away," Jarrett said.
#4 Live Streaming Sites Do Not Require Users To Be Adults
There are a lot of other free live streaming sites including UStream, Livestream, YouTube and even Facebook. None of them are regulated or have age restrictions. Other than Facebook, the other sites have no enforceable terms or regulations in place for abusers.
#5 Mother Arranged For Daughter To Have Counseling By School Officer
Though it is unclear if the 12 year old was doing anything inappropriate at this point, Jarrett arranged for a school resource officer to talk to Emily about the live streaming, and recorded it to help other parents talk to their children about this issue.
"When you're video-chatting live that invites all kinds of predators into your world," the officer told Emily.
