A smart-mouthed teenage girl costs her father $80,000 with a 'SUCK IT' Facebook post, and now he has to pay his attorney fees as well.
#1 Facebook Can Be Costly
Another reason why everyone shouldn't let their kids use Facebook. Recently an irresponsible teenage girl caused her father to lose over $80,000 through a single Facebook post.
#2 He Won A Discrimination Suit
The former head of a private preparatory school in Miami, Florida is out an $80,000 discrimination settlement. Patrick Snay, 69, the former head of Gulliver Preparatory School, filed an age discrimination complaint when his 2010-11 contract wasn't renewed for employment. After months of mediation, the school and Snay came to an agreement in which Snay would be paid $10,000 in back pay and an $80,000 settlement for himself, equivalent of one year's pay. Gulliver Schools also agreed to cut Snay's attorneys a check for over $60,000 and another for "expenses".
#3 Smart Mouthed Girl Told The World Via Facebook
But before the ink could dry on the deal, Snay's daughter took to Facebook, boasting, "Mama and Papa Snay won the case against Gulliver. Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT!"
#4 Gulliver Officials Quickly Rescinded The Settlement
Snay's daughter blasted the message to her 1,200 Facebook friends and followers, which included many current and former Gulliver students. Word of the post spread like wildfire back to school officials. Within just a couple of days, Gulliver Schools sent a letter to Snay's attorneys stating that Snay had broken a confidentiality agreement and that he would not be receiving the $80,000 settlement that they were planning to send that day.
#5 The Confidentiality Clause
The settlement agreement stated that neither Snay nor his wife could speak about the settlement to anyone except for his attorneys and other professional advisers. Telling their daughter was not part of the deal. The couple filed for an injunction against the school to force them to pay up, but the judge denied them and said the daughter's knowledge of the settlement and her Facebook post had violated the confidentiality agreement.
#6 She Missed Learning A Valuable Lesson
The former headmaster said that his daughter had suffered psychological and emotional scars because he had lost his position at the school, and he had to explain to her what had happened. However, her Facebook photos show a girl who is partying, drinking, and telling the world to "Suck IT"!
He has to pay his own attorney fees and expenses. And, he is now headmaster at $20,000-a-year Riviera Preparatory School in Coral Gables.
