A woman who had been trying to get pregnant for a year got the shock of her life when she found out that she was born a biological man
A 25-year-old married woman from China had been trying to get pregnant for a year without success.
It was when she went in for an ankle checkup that she found out that was actually born a biological male, making her intersex.
She had originally gone into the doctor’s office for a simple X-ray on an ankle injury. What prompted further enquiry was the doctor’s shock that her bones were underdeveloped.
Upon further investigation, the woman known as Pingping, found out that she had the condition 46 XY disorder of sexual development.
The condition which only affects a small percentage of people causes them to be born with the Y chromosome which biological men are typically born with. Apart from the Y chromosome, she was born with female genitalia.
As a child, her mother was told that she was growing at a slower rate than others. Ping who had never had a period before said she was embarrassed to go to the doctors for such an intimate issue.
Pingping was also shocked to discover that she did not have a uterus or ovaries which explained her inability to have children.
Pingping is now reevaluating her gender identity. Doctors have said that her case is not as aggressive as others that have semi-developed genitalia. He also added that other than hormone therapy, Pingping or others in a similar position would need to go through psychological and therapeutic treatment.
"It takes a long time to rebuild the social role and reconstruct the family and it’s going to be a painstaking process, where psychological intervention is necessary. But Pingping has not asked for help from us so far"
