Apparently, they spread germs and bacteria. A study was conducted comparing paper towels, hot air dryers and jet air dryers.

#3 Airborne Bacteria

It measured airborne bacteria levels and discovered that germs spread around both the jet dryers and warm air dryers were more than around the paper towel dispenser. The worse one was the jet dryer because the bacteria spread by those were 4.5 times more than warm air dryers and 27 times more than paper towel dispenser.

#4 Havoc

The study also reveals that the bacteria spread through jet dryers stayed in the air for more than 15 minutes. (OMG). Of course, this created havoc, because washing hands in the restroom is a must. And it also caused a revolt among hand dryer companies. They claim that this study has been done in order increase sales of paper towel which are not cost effective, and require the use of tons of paper.

#5 Wash Your Hands!

We must state that these are just preliminary tests, but one thing is true: wash your hands thouroughly and there will be less bacteria or viruses to spread, no matter how you decide to dry your hands!
