Tenants Reveal The Creepiest Encounters They've Had With Their Landlords
After These Creepy Landlord Stories You'll Think Twice About Renting Again
#1
Is it better to rent or to buy a home, that is the age old question that many people struggle with. For some, it makes more sense to simply rent an apartment and not have the worries that come with being tied down with a mortgage. But these tenants have some horror stories about their rented apartments and landlords that will blow your mind. The next time you go looking for a new apartment you might want to rethink signing that lease agreement.
#2 Nazi No No
Not altogether terrible, but my landlords currently have a swastika painted on the front door. I live in the basement, and I happen to have familial connections to Germans and Jews. I live in Canada and am too polite to complain. Yes, I do know the swastika is making a comeback as something positive, but it hasn't quite made it that far just yet.
#3 Unwanted Bather
It wasn't uncommon to wake up and find him in your room 'inspecting' something. People who lived in his buildings said he'd sometimes take baths in other people's bathrooms. I caught him several times rummaging through my desk.
#4 He Let The Dogs Out
It was a home with an apartment in the basement. If my alcoholic landlord didn't like my music or games I was playing he would turn the router off that was in his part of the home. It pissed me off to no end. He also let my dog out and she was picked up by animal control. $270 later I was about 5 seconds from getting into a fist fight with him when the police arrived and he claimed I was six months behind in my rent. I showed the cops my receipts and they told the guy to quit harassing me. I moved out that week.
#5 Christmas Vacation
My landlord asked if I was going home for Christmas and I said I was. Christmas sucked so I came back early and found my landlord and three of his buddies smoking cigarettes, drinking beer and playing poker in my living room. Moved out the next day.
#6 Someone Is Watching Over You
My neighbor moved because she caught the building manager sneaking into her apartment at night and watching her sleep. She had a weird feeling someone had been in her apartment so she set up a camera. She caught him using his key to let himself in about 3am and then standing by her bed for about an hour watching her while she slept.
#7 My Eyes Are Up Here
He kept the credit card machine on a spot on his desk where you had to lean over to reach. As a result, your boobs would dangle super close to his face. The girls in my building would all go pay rent together because no one wanted to be alone with him.
#8 Window Shopper
At my first apartment, if I didn't answer the door, my landlord would knock on my bedroom window. If I still didn't answer, he'd open the window (they were really crappy old windows) and shout into it. He caught me the first few days almost naked until I blocked the windows with my dresser.
#9 No Soup For You
Bill was about 70 and a little crazy. He asked where I was from and I told him Madison, WI. He replied, 'Madison is full of communists. Are you a communist? Are you a socialist? No democrats or leftists are allowed in this building. If I find out you're inviting them over, you're evicted.
#10 Peeping Aristocrat
After a guy rented out a home in the Hamptons, it was discovered that he had hidden multiple cameras in the home and allegedly filmed a family, which included children. He had numerous video clips on his computer of the family in personal predicaments when they finally found out.
#11 Boundry Issues
My landlord asked me out on a date, I said no yesterday. This morning he messaged me saying I have 1 week to move out. Creepy asshole.
#12 Too Many Restrictions
A Twitter user was handed this very strict set of rules when she viewed an apartment. It said that she couldn't use the kitchen or ever have pork in the house. Needless to say, she did not sign the lease. No more than 2 visitors a month?
#13 Mailbox Bandit
I was passing by the cluster of mailboxes yesterday when I witnessed my landlord digging in everyone's mailboxes. I even saw him dig in mine. I don't know if he actually opened anyone's mail but my neighbor told me that she had missing letters and checks in the past.
#14 Extra Fee For That Thingy That Dries Sneakers
My last landlord charged us for allegedly taking a sneaker drying rack when we moved out. We had no idea what he was talking about, but he said he knew it was in the apartment because he would come down to our apartment to dry his shoes when we weren't home. So apparently he not only entered unannounced, he use whatever that dryer is to dry his shoes.
#15 Summer Rent Fee
7 months after I moved out I get a call from a collections agency saying I'm in debt for around $4,000! I have no idea what they're talking about. Apparently Larry (the landlord) said that not only did I not pay rent, which is a lie, but also that he classified my apartment as "abandoned" and kept charging me rent throughout the summer.
#16 Utility Switcheroo
I had an apartment near campus that had all utilities included in the rent. It was in a house converted into multiple apartments. The landlord kept trying to get all the tenants to put the bills in one of our names even though we had no access to the thermostat. About halfway through the lease, and when we refused he allowed the heat to be turned off in February. Then the power altogether. While we were still living there.
