After Judge Frank Caprio revealed his cancer diagnosis, followers of Caught in Providence flocked to social media to show their support.
Frank Caprio, a beloved former chief judge of Providence, Rhode Island's municipal court, gained notoriety in 2018 for his portrayal of himself as "the nicest judge in the world" on the reality TV series Caught in Providence.
The 87-year-old updated his fans on the status of his health on social media on December 6.
Regarding his birthday, the adored TV judge says it's "one of the happiest days of the year."
He says: "And recently I celebrated my 87th birthday and I received so many wonderful messages from people all over the world. This birthday is a little different than any other I have ever had.”
"Quite recently I was not feeling well and I received a medical examination and the report was not a good one."
Judge Caprio discloses that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, referring to it as "an insidious form of cancer."
He clarifies that he is receiving care from two distinct medical teams, one based in Boston, Massachusetts, and the other in Rhode Island.
He continues: "I pray that God guides their thoughts and their hands and their treatment of me. I know this is a long road and I'm fully prepared to fight as hard as I can.”
"One thing that people ask me is: 'What can I do for you?' First of all, I can't thank all of you enough for your friendship and your kind messages.”
"But I would ask each of you, in your own way, to please pray for me. I am in need of the power of prayer, which I believe in addition to the medical treatment that I'm receiving is the most powerful weapon to help me survive this.”
"Just knowing that you are keeping me in your thoughts means the world to me. So, thank you for all of your past messages, thank you for your loving support and please remember, just a small prayer. I'd really appreciate it."
Supporters of the judge flock to the post to offer their encouragement.
One Instagram user said: "We love you so much. Praying for your recovery."
"I will pray for you every day. Good and generous souls like yours make this world a better place," another added.
And a third commented: "You are the embodiment of real justice on earth, and God will not overlook that. My prayers to your recovery judge. You got this!"
Caprio held positions as head of the Rhode Island Board of Governors and Education and chief judge of the Rhode Island Municipal Court during his career.
Along with his wife Joyce, the judge is the father of five children. Two of his sons, Frank and David, were elected as Democratic Party representatives in Rhode Island.
In a renowned 2018 moment, Caprio summoned the mother-of-two's son to the bench, questioning whether he believed the case warranted dismissal, ultimately resulting in the cancellation of her ticket.
'My mom, she's looking for work cos she's trying to move from our house. That's why she can't spend her money on anything,' Armando Ramos told the court.
The camera zooms in on Ramos's mother, clearly moved by her son's words.
As Judge Caprio dismissed the case, he informed him: ‘Shake my hand, Look me in the eye. You're a good kid, you love your mom. You made a good plea on her behalf.'
