Anton Delgado was given the opportunity to have a childhood and a family when a Texas couple made the decision to adopt him. According to "Today," Vanessa and Jason Delgado adopted Anton in 2012, two years after he was born in Moscow with epidermolysis bullosa, a rare condition more commonly known as "butterfly skin."

Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic condition that causes blistering of the skin that can range from mild to severe, as described by the Mayo Clinic. The medical source also explains that the blisters can form in reaction to very minor forms of contact with the skin, such as heat, scratching and rubbing.Anton's biological parents abandoned him upon learning of his condition, and proceeded to take his healthy twin brother home. As Redbook explains, the minute Vanessa saw a photo of the orphaned Anton, she knew she had to adopt him.

Vanessa told "Today" that the entire adoption process took 13 months and cost approximately $40,000. After the extensive process had finally come to an end, the Delgados were able to take 2-year-old Anton home

After receiving a bone marrow transplant, Anton showed significant signs of improvement. However, the boy's health took a turn for the worse late in 2015, and the Delgado family found themselves coping with some very difficult news.According to a Crowdrise page dedicated to Anton, he had developed intussusception in November. "His intestines were going into his stomach which was going into his colon, and it was all intertwined," explains the Crowdrise page.

Sadly Anton died on Dec. 15, 2015.

Help Anton, a Facebook page started to spread awareness and garner support for Anton's situation, features several updates from the family following the boy's death, including a slideshow created for the funeral.
