#3 What Experts Says?

After this shocking operation, Dr Anton Emmanuel, a consultant

Gastroenterologist at University College London Hospitals, said it is impossible to swallow a toothbrush mistakenly.

He said, 'Most of the cases like this are patients with psychiatric disorders,'

'You have to voluntarily swallow such a long, rigid object like toothbrush. It may be so surprising but it is possible condition to overcome the gag reflex, it's mind over the matter.'

The toothbrush will slip down to the oesophagus easily without getting stuck - unlike the coins or the Lego blocks, he said.

However, once it hits the stomach area it cannot usually pass through the valve which leads into the bowel, therefore it blocks it there.

'It becomes stuck and stops the stomach carrying out its function normally. All the stomach acid and saliva cannot drain easily.

after this 'The patient will feel very sick, nauseous, with stomach ache, pain, and will start vomiting. 'That is when they arrive at hospital with stomach problem and something funny on their X-ray.'

#4 Reason...

Swallowing toothbrushes is generally associated with eating disorders problem such as bulimia, according to a paper in the American Roentgen Ray Society.

It said patients with bulimia disorder often use such objects to induce vomiting and then accidentally ingest them.

‘Although anything may be used, the toothbrush seems to be used generally, likely because of it's presence in the bathroom, where self-induced vomiting most often occurs,' the authors said.
