#1 Some have attacked Joey Restaurants for going against their employees 'human rights'

Canadian diner Joey Restaurants has been accused of being "sexist" for forcing female staff members to wait on tables in heels, unless they have a medical excuse.

Even when a worker lost one of her toenails, management warned her not to change into comfortable flat shoes.

#3 Not everyone was sympathetic towards the waitress, with some commenters revealing that she knew what the uniform policy was before taking the job

Sharing the gruesome snap to social media, Nicola informed Facebook users: "Their policy is still that female staff wear heels unless medically restricted."

Nicola revealed: "My friends feet were bleeding to the point she lost a toe nail and she was still discouraged and berated by the shift manager for changing into flats (specifically told that heels would be required on her next shift the following day)."

After accusing management of being sexist, Nicola revealed that female staff have to buy specialist uniform, whereas "male staff can dress themselves in black clothing from their own closets".

Nicola hit out at the restaurant chain for their "sexist, archaic requirements and totally disgusting policy", encouraging other diners to boycott the branch.

Since she uploaded the snap of her friend's blood-splattered toes to Facebook, over 11,000 people have shared her message.

Hundreds of commenters have remarked that they won't be returning to the diner, with many also slamming management for their unfair policies.

An irate Facebook user advised: "This is a human rights issue. No need for a lawyer. File a human rights complaint."

Another added: "It took me a minute but then I realised that the red was blood.

"That's physically and mentally inhumane."

Despite the overwhelming support, not everyone saw a problem in the strict high heel requirements.

One commenter said: "I think it's horrible but these women took the job knowing what they needed to wear...

"It would be like if I went to a job and they told me I had to wear something that I knew would hurt me, took the job anyway then complained that it was wrong, it would be kind of hypocritical."

A spokesperson for Joey Restaurants' said: "‘Our current shoe guidelines require both male and female employees to wear a black dress shoe that is non-slip with a thick sole for safety reasons.

"Under this guide, they choose what is comfortable for them.

"There is no minimum height when it comes to our shoe policy. Shoes range from black dress flats, wedges and heels.

"For those employees wearing heels, we require the heel height to be no higher than 2.5."
