#1 The international space station of course! Back in 2014 they were peering out of their fancy telescope and saw a star explode. That means that the light will have taken two years to reach earth since the hubble telescope last saw it.

#2 For those of you wondering what a supernova is it’s a massive explosion that briefly outshines at entire galaxy. In this brief moment the amount of energy it expels is the equivalent to what a star gives out in its entire lifetime. The extremely luminous burst of radiation expels much or all of a star’s material. A supernovae can be triggered in one of two ways: by a sudden re-ignition of nuclear fusion in a degenerate star; or by the gravitational collapse of the core of a massive star.

#3 But what’s more important is what is it going to look like from earth!? Scientists aren’t quite sure, but here are a couple of artists interpretations.

#4 Okay, so this last one may be a little exaggerated, but this is what it would look like if the star that had exploded was a lot closer. If this was the case we’d probably all be dead! But it’s really exciting that we’ll going to be able to see this seismic event next year.
