Can You Work Out Why This Teacher Failed A Student For Answering 5+5+5 = 15?

No matter how much math sucks there are some things in math that are universal right? Like 1 + 1 = 2 and 5 x 3 = 15. Or so you thought, because as this American primary school student found out, the latter is not always the case

The student received a score of -1 for answering 5 x 3 = 15 and 4 x 6 = 24:

No you've not lost all your math skills the answers are technically right, it's just that the working out is wrong. So the student should have written 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 instead.

This is called ‘Common Core' and most adults with school age children will tell you it freaking sucks. Instead of teaching kids to solve problems in various way they are being taught that there is only one correct way to do things. Anything else is wrong.
