Talk about disengagement! For a while they seemed so happy together, smiling for cameras, showing off dazzling diamond rings, and planning the perfect star-studded nuptials. But even the best laid wedding plans come to a screeching halt when a celebrity couple gets cold feet just weeks or even days before their big day.
Several Hollywood stars, supermodels, and A-listers have been left practically standing at the altar. Take a look at these runaway brides and grooms who called off their engagements. Which ones surprised you, and which ones did you see coming?
#1 Brad Pitt & Gwyneth Paltrow
They met in 1995 on the set of "Seven," but Pitt and Paltrow's beloved Hollywood romance ended on June 16, 1997. Pitt proposed in Dec. 1996, Paltrow said yes, and they were reportedly set to marry in East Hampton, N.Y. in the summer of '97. Of course, that never happened!
#2 Julia Roberts & Kiefer Sutherland
In 1991, Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland's Hollywood wedding was set to take place at 20th Century Fox's Soundstage 14. But it never happened. Roberts shocked the world when she broke up with Sutherland just three days before the ceremony and ran off with his best friend, actor Jason Patric. Friends said Sutherland was "shocked" by the split, but more than a decade later, he said, "I commend Julia for seeing how young and silly we were, even as painful and difficult as it was."
#3 Hugh Hefner & Crystal Harris
Playboy playmate Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner were set to wed in June 2011, but Harris -- who is more than half a century younger than Hefner -- called off the nuptials just a few days before their wedding at the Playboy Mansion. The couple ended their relationship completely after the broken engagement. BUT, a year later they rekindled their romance and wed on the New Year's Eve 2012.
#4 Maksim Chmerkovskiy & Karina Smirnoff
The stars seemed to align for the Dancing with the Stars pros who were engaged within six months of their first date in 2008. But star-crossed lovers are forever doomed, and the dancers called it quits in 2009, ending their plans for a summer wedding.
#5 Johnny Depp & Winona Ryder
Depp not only put a ring on it, he tattooed "Winona Forever" on his bicep during the couple's courtship. The Edward Scissorhands duo known for their penchant for PDA never made it to the altar, and Depp eventually altered the tat to "Wino Forever."
#6 Heather Locklear & Jack Wagner
Our favorite Melrose Place lovers began their true romance in 2007 after Locklear's split from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. Engaged in April 2011, the couple eventually called it quits, saying planning the wedding was taking time away from their children.
#7 Tara Reid & Carson Daly
The "Voice" host and "American Pie" star dated for almost two years before they became engaged in 2000. They were set to have a summer wedding in 2001, but Reid got cold feet and they announced their split in July 2001.
#8 Tara Reid & Michael Axtmann
The American Pie actress also axed plans to marry entrepreneur Michael Axtmann the month before the couple's intimate May 22, 2010, ceremony. A year later, People magazine reported Reid married Danish businessman Michael Lillelund but Reid declared she'd wed someone entirely different (Bulgarian financier Zachary Kehayov). She debunked the myth two months later, leaving fans scratching their heads in confusion. Currently Reid is not engaged nor married that we know of.
#9 Jennifer Love Hewitt & Ross McCall
J-Love had the dress and a location for her spring 2009 destination wedding to the Scottish actor whom she met during his 2005 appearance on Ghost Whisperer. But she called off the engagement in late 2008. In 2013 she married The Client List co-star Brian Hallisay.
#10 Rachel Hunter & Jarret Stoll
Rachel Hunter was dumped by her fiance Jarret Stoll just two months before their August 2009 wedding. Hunter was devastated as "everything was in place for their wedding." During the split, her rep asked the media to respect her privacy during "this extremely upsetting time."
#11 Demi Moore & Emilio Estevez
Fellow young actors Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez were supposed to get married on December 13, 1986. Shortly before the ceremony the couple announced their decision to call everything off and remain "just friends." The next year Demi married Bruce Willis.
