The early 2000s were a wondrous time. We had mix CDs, Blockbuster, flip phones, trucker hats, and knockoff Louis Vuitton bags — what else could anyone possibly need in life!? The early 2000s also saw some pretty iconic celebrity couples. And although most of these relationships were short-lived, they definitely made a big impact on us. Others (like #2, #7, and #12) I had absolutely no idea about until now. Seriously, what was I doing back then? So if you loved the early 2000s as much as I did, keep on scrolling to revisit 16 celebrity relationships that we completely forgot happened.
1. Kirsten Dunst & Jake Gyllenhaal
These two got together in 2002 and stayed together for just under two years before calling it quits. They were such a cute couple. It was kind of sad to see them split up.
2. Janet Jackson & Matthew McConaughey
This might be the most random pairing we have. These two had a short fling in 2002 after meeting at the Grammys. While McConaughey said they were "just friends," Jackson admitted they were more than friends.
3. Scarlett Johansson & Josh Hartnett
Way before Scar Jo was turning heads in the Avengers, she and her Black Dahlia co-star had a 2-year fling from 2004 to 2006.
4. Brittany Murphy & Ashton Kutcher
After being featured in Just Married, these two dated from October 2002 until April 2003. They were a match made in heaven.
5. Ryan Gosling & Sandra Bullock
Before Gosling dated his The Notebook costar, Rachel McAdams, he was with Bullock. After meeting on the set of 2002's Murder by Numbers, Ryan and Sandra gave it a go until ending things in 2003. Gosling said that between Bullock and McAdams, "I had two of the greatest girlfriend of all time. I haven’t met anybody who could top them."
6. Cameron Diaz & Jared Leto
Surprisingly these two had a super secret relationship from 1999 to 2003. Pretty impressive for such high-profile people! Sadly all good things must end. They still remain friends to this day, though.
7. Heath Ledger & Naomi Watts
They were so unbelievably gorgeous together. It doesn't even seem like they were together from 2002 to 2004. Those 2 years felt like an eternity.
8. Orlando Bloom & Kate Bosworth
These two hooked up early in their careers. From 2003 to 2006 they were red-carpet Gods but then things ended. These two were simply too hot together to last.
9. 50 Cent & Vivica A. Fox
They gave romance a shot in 2003. No one really knows when or why they broke up, but man they sure did have a lot of say about each other and none of it was nice. Quite the ending for such an odd couple to begin with.
10. Mila Kunis & Macaulay Culkin
Sometimes it's hard to believe this match even happened. They seemed so unlikely. I still can't get over how unlikely this match was. These two had a low-key relationship starting in 2002 that lasted for an impressive eight years before they called it quits. According to Page Six, "The split was amicable, and they remain close friends."
11. Paris Hilton & Nick Carter
Back in 2004, Hilton and Carter had a 10-month relationship. While it may have been brief, it was definitely not lacking in PDA. You just knew these two were not going to last. It all just felt so forced. But hey, they got lots of publicity right?
12. David Gallagher & Megan Fox
Fox reportedly dated the 7th Heaven star from 2003 to 2004. Sometimes these things just go under the radar apparently.
13. Joel Madden & Hilary Duff
Duff and Madden dated from 2004 to 2006. There was quite a bit of controversy when they first got together. She was ONLY 16 and he was 25!!!! The details of their romance are a bit, um, controversial, as Duff told Cosmopolitan: "I had a 26-year-old boyfriend. So everyone can make their own assumptions about what I was doing."
14. Ryan Reynolds & Alanis Morissette
Before sliding a ring onto Blake Lively's finger, Reynolds dated the Canadian singer in 2002. They got engaged in 2004 but eventually broke up in February 2007. Still not a bad 5-year stint.
15. Jamie Dornan & Keira Knightley
Yep, Christian Grey and Anna Karenina dated from 2003 to 2005. Apparently, she is the one who helped his acting career get off the ground by introducing him to her agent. When they broke up, he even wrote a sad song about his feelings for her.
Did ANY of you know this was a thing?
16. Britney Spears & Colin Farrell
The two were seen sharing an intense make out session after a screening of Farrell's film The Recruit, but Farrell set the record straight when he said, "We're just mates, and we're not dating." Still, in 2003, the couple was paparazzi fodder after being spotted getting hot and heavy on his hotel balcony. Oh, Brit!
17. Rihanna and Shia LaBeouf
These two went on a date back in 2007, but it didn't go very well. LaBeouf told Playboy, "It never got beyond one date ... The spark wasn’t there. We weren’t passionate about each other in that way, so we remain friends." At least they are still friends, right? Not like her and certain Brown boy.
