Edward Herbert entered a plea of insanity back in April. This notion was swiftly rejected after the judge heard the story of how he covered his daughter in gasoline and set her on fire in front of his wife. Herbert was said to have spent the day binging on alcohol and drugs before coming home and committing the heinous act.

The 43-year-old father of 3 then doused his other daughter in gasoline. The 3-year-old was left with severe burns that required laser scar therapy and surgery. Amanda Forrester who prosecuted the case said: “She will be permanently scarred." After spending the day drinking and getting high he was quoted as saying to his wife that: “the werewolf is coming at 12:00 pm”.

The court was told how at nearly midnight he screamed “that’s it bitch, I am going to kill you” before he grabbed a can of gasoline and went to his daughters’ room. He then covered her in gas and set her ablaze before dousing his other daughter. A neighbor arrived soon after carrying a fire extinguisher and found Hebert walking back and forth naked in the kitchen and drinking a beer.

Allegedly Herbert told the neighbor that he could do whatever he wanted to the children because they are his kids. He also added that his toddler deserved to be burned because she was too beautiful. Officer Stephanie Bochorsky could hear a commotion coming from her neighbors home and ran over to check things out. During the trial, she had to hold back her tears as she described the horrific scene. When she arrived she saw the 3-year-old standing there covered in fire and used a blanket to put of the flames.

The officer then noticed Herbert pouring gas on his other daughter, this one autistic while she was laying in her bed. She dragged both children out of the house saving their lives.

The other neighbor was attacked by Herbert who lunged at him with a knife. He fended Herbert off by hitting him in the head with the fire extinguisher that he brought. Another neighbor rescued Herbert's 6-year-old son from the home. Herbert was quoted as telling the neighbor: “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t have lit me boy up.”

Forrester stated that his son had to forcefully removed from his bed because he was stunned with fear from all that he heard. If the officer had not gotten involved, Herbert would have likely set his other daughter on fire as well.

Apart from the physical disfigurement, the 3-year-old has suffered damaged hearing and vocal chords. She will also continue to suffer from pain at the burn sites.

The judge presiding over the case commended and thanked the neighbors for their quick and brave actions that night saying that Officer Bochorsky truly saved the lives of the two girls.

Herbert claimed to suffer from psychosis and bipolar disorder but these claims were found to be false. He has been permanently banned from contacting his wife or any of his children on top of the 17 years in prison.
