Dangerous Drug Called ‘Flakka’ Turns People Into Delusional Zombie-Like Monsters

A drug which sends users into a paranoid frenzy where they act like zombies, hide from imaginary assailants and strip naked as their body overheats.

Called flakka, and known on the street as 'gravel' and by chemists as alpha-PVP, it has become known as America's scariest drugs.

Its extreme effect on the body means up to four police officers are needed to restrain a person high on the drug.

"It's called the zombie drug because people who use it go into a zombie state and either eat themselves or bite and chew other people. They exhibit delusional behavior and superhuman strength." said Bethlehem police Chief Mark DiLuzio.

Safe Work Laboratories, Adelaide forensic toxicologist Andrew Leibe (pictured) said he has tested staff at mining and oil companies for flakka and got back positive results for the drug which costs as little as $15

One of the hundreds of different variations of drugs known as bath salts, which Mr Lebie says has hit the market in a 'tsunami' of compounds almost impossible to regulate, flakka has caused mayhem in towns and cities.

'On its own LSD can be a pleasant hallucinogenic with very strong visions, but if you combine that with ice you get the euphoria and aggression that goes with it.

'Flakka is that it has not been strictly illegal, because it's a new drug developed in China most likely by a 19-year-old on a computer that a criminal mastermind or bikie gangs.

'They sell it over the internet and it's inexpensive because there are virtually no middle men.'

Flakka started turning up in Europe three to four years ago and in the US last year, particularly in southern states like Florida.

Video of people said to be on flakka shows them smashing into a police station while they believe they are being shot at, running through McDonalds cafes scaring patrons and children and screaming at passers by while in the throes of a hallucination.

Mr Leibie said flakka does not show up in traditional drugs blood and saliva tests. But the national drug testing company he works for, Safe Work Laboratories, has recorded dozens of positive tests for the drug.

US reports say the use of flakka has increased by 780 per cent in the last three years and costs as little as $US5 a hit.
