We have enough mystery right here on land to figure out, and man has been exploring space for decades. But what about what lies beneath the deep seas? The discoveries here are just a handful of the weird and unusual things found in our waters right here on Earth.
#1 The Atlantis Of Japan
Over 2,000 years ago a city sank into the ocean off the coast of Yonaguni Jima following massive seismic activity. The Yonaguni discovery has been dismissed by some as a rock formation that formed naturally and shaped by erosion, but that theory has skeptics that have been under the sea to believe it is man made. The structures are distinct in their angles, animals shapes, and apparent columns and doorways. One section of the discovery is a stepped pyramid that stands 25 feet in height. Local biologists and geographers believe this is a lost continent.
#2 Gulf Of Mexico Shipwreck
There are over 2,000 known ships scattered around the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. Only one has captured the attention of scientists like this vessel. It is about 250 years old and tucked away some 2,500 feet of water. It has been the subject of countless archeological expeditions and was found when digging for an oil line. However, nobody can get close to the ship because it sends off some sort of electrical currents and everyone who has tried to figure out what it is has ended up injured or dead.
#3 Colossal Squid
The colossal squid is scary, elusive, and big enough to work as a stand-in for The Kraken in The Clash Of The Titans. To put the colossal squid in perspective, the giant squid is known to measure up to 43 feet long and was first discovered in 2012. It can weigh about 1,000 pounds.
#4 Several Spotted
On the other hand, the colossal squid reaches up to 46 feet long and can weigh 1,650 pounds. The giant squid features tentacles with suckers on them, the colossal squid has sharp hooks on its tentacles. Only one living specimen have been found and studied, but many dead colossal squids have been washed up on beaches over the last 10 years in the Southern hemisphere.
#5 Leptocephalus Giganteus
The only specimen captured was found off the coast of New Zealand in 1959 and measured only 3 feet in length. However, it's believed that was a larval stage of the species, suggesting that the adult Leptocephalus could grow into a 98 foot eel once it fully matures.
#6 Seen In Waters New Australia
While many sightings of LG have been sighted near Australia and New Zealand over the years, none have been captured or studied in the adult stage, or alive. This leaves marine biologists to believe the species either dies before reaching adulthood ot lives deep at the bottom of the sea.
#7 Aegean Sea Ruins
Greece is one of the world's oldest civilizations and has its fair share of historical sites. But the discovery of the Aegean Sea Ruins have been one of the most intriguing finds in Greek history. Found in 2014 off the coast of Delos, it was discovered to be a complete pottery workshop complete with a kiln and various pots, a retaining wall, towers, and pathways. The find covers 12 miles of seabed. It is estimated that the structures succumbed to the sea over 4,500 years ago. It may be the ancient city of Kane where the Athenians defeated the Spartans.
#8 Cuban Underwater City
Finding a city under the sea is always exciting, but when that city is in the Bermuda Triangle, just miles from Cuba, it is even more interesting. In 2001 sonar scans off the Cuban coast revealed a series of distinctive geometric structures. The structures sit at least 2,400 feet below water so it's hard to fathom when they were constructed.
#9 It Has Pyramids
Some experts have gone so far as to say that they can identify pyramids and even a sphinx amongst the crumbling structures. Many theories have called this the lost city of Atlantis though there has been no follow-up research which has conspiracy theorists yelling "cover up!"
#10 Baltic Sea Anomaly
There are an estimated 100,000 shipwrecks sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. There is at least one ship known by many as The Baltic UFO and was discovered by Ocean X Team, a group of Swedish divers.
#11 It Appears Alien In Nature
The structure, nearly 200 feet in diameter has everyone theorizing as to what it could be. A space ship, an antisubmarine device, or simply a geographical formation are among the things suggested that is part of the wreckage. However, a statue is seen in imaging, and the entire structure seems to send out electrical currents whenever something gets near it. It has shut down computerized equipment, causing some to believe the circular object is not of this planet.
#12 The Milky Sea Effect
There is technology to figure out the how to this phenomenon, but they still can't figure out the why. For centuries sailors have described passing mysterious patches of milky sea that glows in the moonlight. In 1985 researchers studied the milky waters and identified the cause as bacterial in nature.
#13 Nobody Can Say Why It Happens
Subsequent studies and satellite images have given us a better understanding of this bioluminescent phenomenon which has been seen the size of the state of Connecticut. However, no one can determine just why this bacteria congregates in this manner in sudden spurts.
#14 Surviving Megalodon
Sources and experts claim the Megalodon is officially extinct. But don't tell that to those who have spotted them. There is a renewed interest in the possible reemergence of the giant sea creature after several people have claimed to have spotted them. It is estimated to be 350 feet long, 3 times larger than a great white shark. The creature was thought dead for 360,000 years before its rediscovery once more in 1935 and the 15-foot megamouth shark was unknown until 1972. This gives scientists a belief that perhaps the megalodon may still be around in the depths of the oceans.
#15 The Bimini Road
Another discovery that is believed to be the lost city of Atlantis, this large arrangement of stones near the Bahamas, it is often referred to as the Bimini Road because the structures resemble stepping stones or a roadway and is located near North Bimini Island. Expeditions have said a more appropriate name for the structure is the Bimini Wall since it runs about a mile long and is made from sandstone blocks. It is one of three very similar formations in the area. Whether it's a road or a wall, no one can figure out how the stones were engineered to form such a captivating sight.
