Demi Lovato has always been somewhat of a controversial figure, making headlines for the wrong reasons more often than not. Yet another immensely successful Disney marketing product, many feel that her music – if at all anything – reeks of oblivious mediocrity. Criticising her fifth album, “Confident”, PopCrush reported: “She’s spoken decoratively about her aim – to do away with her old self – but the subsequent case she makes is a little confused, shows signs of exhaustion and seems borrowed from stock affirmations.” The piece also concluded: “And, in the event you disagree, it’s of no concern to her – she’ll continue to say it’s so, over and over, until you’re too worn out to argue against the audio-filibuster.” And it’s not just her music. Many feel that her fans love her not because of her talent but because of her story and her background – a star who happened to meet the right people at the right time. Some would even go to the extent of saying that she built her entire career selling on self-pity. Indeed, Lovato has been through her shares of ups and downs – from battling a disorder to depression to checking into rehab at the age of 18 – she has been there, done that. Needless to say, flak has followed. Here are a few such reasons why it’s so easy for people to dislike Demi Lovato.
Demi Lovato Makes It So Easy For People To Hate Her. This Is Why.
The Fact That She Can’t Hit Her High Notes Live
While promoting her album, “Tell Me You Love Me”, Demi Lovato was singing on stage at the iHeartRadio Theatre in NYC. The singer was performing “Stone Cold” for her fans when disaster struck. Reaching the end of the chorus, as erstwhile Disney darling went on to sing the lyrics, “If happy is her, I’m happy for you,” Demi’s voice broke on the note climb. And, that was not all. Not only did Demi Lovato give away the fact that she can’t hit her high notes when performing live, she also dropped the F-bomb on the unsuspecting crowd. She stopped mid-performance, shrugged on stage and exclaimed: “Fuck. I don’t know what to do.” She then brought the chorus down to an octave that she could sing in and later justified her stance, claiming: “That’s what we call not lip-syncing.”
Then There Was The Time When She Said “I Get Along With Me Very Well”
Time and again, the Disney Channel alum has mentioned in her interviews – one way or the other – that she is obsessed with herself. In an interview with Elvis Duran during The Z100 Morning Show, she said: “I get along with me very well.” And that was not all. In one of her discussions, Demi even went to declare that she didn’t like having women around. “In my work environment, I used to only surround myself with men,” she said. “I only had guys in my band, and I toured with guys and my tour manager was a guy and this and that.” The singer was also quick to add: “I didn’t have any woman in my life that I really trusted.” Naturally, not many of her fans were pleased by this revelation.
The Time When Lovato Said: “I’m One Percent African”
Demi Lovato drew a lot of flak on Twitter after she posted the results of a DNA test claiming that she’s “one percent African.” “I did a DNA test and found out I’m mainly Spanish, with Native America, SCANDINAVIAN (which I had no idea), Irish, BRITISH… And I’m 1% African!!!” the singer tweeted. She also shared a photo of the full results, adding that this was her first DNA test, which she had “found out from my uncle about certain places.” Needless to say, the Twitteratti erupted with criticism, some claiming, “So if you’re from Africa…why are you white?” One even shared a picture of Scream Queens’ Emma Roberts saying, “Thank you for making that announcement that no one cared about.”
Every Time She Changed Her Hair, She Said, “I’m Really Into The Color I Have I Right Now.” Every Time.
The only thing to have moved more quickly than her career is probably the rate at which the singer has changed her hair colors. Starting out as a natural brunette, Lovato has tried every color imaginable – blonde, ginger, blue – you name it and she has done it. First, she had long, curled layers and bangs – then she moved on to shoulder length locks in loose layers, followed by honey and caramel-colored highlights. Soon enough, she chopped her long, flowing locks into a shoulder-length bob with side-swept bangs. Then came the phase of bizarre hair colors – purple, platinum, pink, blue and every time she changed her hair color, she maintained: “I am really into the color I have right now.” Every time.
Her Fans Were Not Too Happy To Learn That She “Is Fascinated By People Who Commit Crimes” And She Only Watches Crime Shows
Demi Lovato’s hard-partying ways are clearly a thing of the past. Because these days the only thing that fascinates her are criminals and crime shows. She actually went on record to reveal: “My reality shows are my crime shows… Disappeared, Dateline and I almost Got Away With It.”. She added: “Everyone’s like ‘What’s wrong with you? Why do you watch these shows?’ I’m fascinated that people not only can commit these crimes but also that they’re humanly capable of doing these things at all. It’s just weird to me that they think they can get away with it. If you watch these shows, it’s actually probably good for society because it shows you that you can never get away with killing somebody. You will always get caught.” Sure, Demi!
Fans Often Criticise Her Volatile Presence On Social Media
As we all know Demi has quite a history of clapping back at haters via social media and this was just another one of those times when she decided she has had too much. She tweeted that she’s going to quit Instagram and Twitter and though we do not know what exactly prompted this decision, it was probably the consequence of the Instagram war that she got into over meme comparisons made between Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande. However, she did mention that she would continue to use Snapchat because, unlike most other social media platforms, there is no space for negative comments on the photo-sharing app. Nevertheless, in less than 24 hours, Lovato was back on Twitter, claiming, “Fuck this…I’m back bitches. And I’m coming back more honest than ever.”
Fans Weren’t Pleased When She Called Out Tay Tay’s Squad, Claiming, “It’s Not Real”
In 2016, Lovato made headlines for openly dissing Taylor Swift in an interview with Glamour magazine. She called out her Tay’s girl squad saying, “To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it’s not real.” In the same interview, she also said she believes Taylor doesn’t act on being a feminist even though she promotes feminism. “My thing is, don’t brand yourself a feminist if you don’t do the work,” she said. She even went on a Twitter rant regarding Taylor’s $250,000 donation to Kesha in the wake of her legal battle with Dr. Luke. “Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I’ll be impressed,” she tweeted.
People Have A Tough Time Keeping Up With Her Issues: “I Was Going To Die Young”, “I Have Bipolar Disorder” – The List Is Endless
Demi Lovato has never been one to shy away from sharing her personal issues. In 2011, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after years of struggling with bulimia, cutting and drug addiction. “I’m not sick of it. If anything, I’m proud to be bipolar,” she told Metro News in an interview. She also said: “For years, people said I was depressed… I would have these episodes of mania. Sometimes I felt invincible and it was these moments when my mind would go all over the place.” Psychological issues aside, Demi also has a history of self-medicating with alcohol cocaine and OxyContin. “I lived fast and I was going to die young. I didn’t think I would make it to 21,” she once said in an interview.
Fans Were Flabbergasted When She Went On Record To Say: “Aliens. I have Seen A UFO”
It would have been terribly unfair if the “Confident” singer didn’t believe in aliens given her undying obsession for the paranormal. Last year, she shared as much while gracing Elle Canada’s September issue. “I have seen a UFO,” she claimed, adding: “I was walking outside and I looked up and it almost was like there was a worm in the sky. It was changing shapes and moving all over the place.” And, this was not the first time Lovato was discussing aliens. In 2014, she appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where she explained: “I know that [aliens are] real… You know Atlantis…that underground city? I believe there could possibly be mermaids, which is actually an alien species that lives in parts of the Indian Ocean… And Christopher Columbus has actually seen three mermaids on his way to America.”
From Joe Jonas To Miley Cyrus, To One Direction, Demi Doesn’t Seem To Like Any Of Her Co-Workers
If there ever was a queen of celebrity diss, it would have to be Demi Lovato. To begin with, there was the issue with her former boyfriend, Joe Jonas. When Perez Hilton tweeted, “#Jemi4Life”, referring to Joe and Demi’s couple name, Demi tweeted back saying, “umm no.” In a later interview, she even revealed that she would never marry him, even though they continued to put up an amicable relationship. She doesn’t seem to have regard for boyband “One Direction” either. When asked if she would work with them, she said: “I focus more on collaborations with people who inspire me.” Then comes the subject of Miley Cyrus. Once thick as thieves, when asked about her equation with Miley, Demi replied, “Um…yeah…that um…we’re, we’re like acquaintances. It’s life and people change.”
The Fact That People Came Out About Her Past As A Bully In High School (Even Though She Has Stood Up Against Bullying Publicly)
This is a bit ironic, given Demi Lovato blames bullying for the exhaustion and eating disorder that sent her to rehab. Many people from Demi’s high school have come forward and revealed that Demi was the real bully. Her former classmates have posted online about how she was always part of a popular group of girls who were usually the ones doing all the teasing. Not to mention how rude she was. In fact, someone named Kristin Turley also wrote a rather damning blog post saying that Demi bullied her when they were in elementary-middle school and posted it on Tumblr. Some of her classmates have even claimed that their former teachers would vouch for Demi not being the genuinely nice, victimised girl that she is pretending to be.
