Two confirmed dead from the latest craze of drinking Mountain Dew with racing fuel.
Dewshine: Teens Are Dying From Drinking A Cocktail Of Mountain Dew And Gasoline
#1 Mountain Dew Craze
For years, Mountain Dew's moto has been to live on the edge, but it looks like teens are taking that too literal! As a challenge, they've begun mixing the soda with GASOLINE!
#2 Two Parts Dew With One Part Racing Fuel
More specifically, they are mixing the high energy caffeine drink with racing fuel. The idea is to get high, cheaply and quickly. It ended up killing two teens already and the craze is on the rise. People are referring to it as ‘moonshine on steroids' or as the teenagers call it, "Dewshine."
#3 Two Tennessee Teens Dead
Officials in Tennessee have revealed that two teenagers have died and two others were made ill after consuming the homemade cocktail. JD Byram and classmate Logan Stephenson died after drinking a concoction of Methanol and Mountain Dew.
#4 Logan Stephenson
Tennessee Poison Center Medical Director Donna Seger told the Associated Press that the teenagers thought they could drink the racing fuel, which is made of methanol. As it is, methanol can be deadly. Sixteen-year-old Logan Stephenson passed away minutes after drinking the mixture and his friend died after being in a coma. The trend hasn't stopped either, as two more teen boys were spotted sipping the drink. One in Iowa and another in Tennessee.
"They thought they knew what it was, that it was a substitute for alcohol," Seger said. "They thought they would get the same effects as alcohol, but they weren't aware of how toxic it was."
#5 Deadly Effects
Friends have dropped off floral arrangements and candles to honor the two dead teens in Greenbrier, TN. Officials say they noticed the color of Stephensons skin had changed and he started having a seizure, his hands started drawing up. Nobody knows how the trend got started, but it appears there was a video posted to YouTube which inspired the two deceased boys.
#6 It's The Same Form Of Alcohol Found In Antifreeze
Methanol is a poisonous and lethal form of alcohol that is mostly found in car products, like de-icing fluids, antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid, as well as copy machines and paint thinner. Teens drink this lethal combination to obtain a buzz or high with little knowledge about its dangerous effects.
#7 Methanol Is Not A Beverage
Seger told WKRN, "It also impacts the vision, and permanent blindness can occur. One can feel inebriated like one does after drinking alcohol. It can also make you sleepy or even go all the way to coma where you are unconscious with high levels of seizures." The National Library of Medicine, on its website, calls methanol "a nondrinking type of alcohol used for industrial and automotive purposes."
#8 Code Red Dew Is Also Dangerous To Children
Methanol is the simplest form of alcohol and is closely related to ethanol, which is the type of alcohol normally found present in beer, wine, and spirits. However, methanol poses significantly higher levels of toxicity, and is probably the high the teens were after. According to the National Institutes of Health, as little as two tablespoons can be deadly to a child, while two to eight ounces are deadly to the average adult.
Experts are saying the mixture is bad, but the uncut version of Mountain Dew Code Red is also dangerous to children because of it's ingredients and energy boosts.
