People have things from their past that they don't want anyone to know about. But people love gossip, and celebrities are great targets for such fodder because everyone is interested in who is dating whom, how much money they are earning, or who they are in a spat with. One thing about celebrities that people love to find out about are the darker and lesser known stories, the things they never wanted their fans to find out. From dark family secrets to inappropriate behavior to the straight up bizarre, these celebrities all have something that they keep buried in the closet. It's just a matter of digging in the right places.

#2 Matthew Broderick

Back in 1987, actors Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were driving on a Northern Ireland highway when their BMW 316 collided with a Volvo, killing a young mother and her child. The two celebs were on vacation at the time prior to the release of Grey's Dirty Dancing. Minutes before the accident, Broderick had stopped at a gas station during a torrential downpour to find out where he was. Before heading out again the rain had ended and at the time of the accident, it wasn't raining but the pavement was slippery and wet. The accident occurred on a stretch of highway that was straight with no curves, but some suspect Broderick was driving on the wrong side of the road, perhaps due to his habit of driving on the right side of the road in the U.S. He was charged with careless driving and fined a mere $175. The people of Ireland were not very happy about the outcome and asked the two actors to never return to the country.

#3 Mark Wahlberg

Mark carries a permanent felony record. The popular rapper turned actor has appeared in more than a few successful films, but he also has a major criminal record. He was charged with attempted murder after going on a racially motivated assault streak where he attacked two Vietnamese men when he was just 16-years-old. After nearly killing the two men, Wahlberg worked tirelessly to turn his life around and is currently seeking a pardon to clear his criminal record. However, the court papers, which are now sealed, once showed that Wahlberg's anger was not about the two men's race, but because they were gay.

He's worked in a bar, fought off zombies, and been a famous bowler, but Woody Harrelson had a lot of problems growing up. However, the biggest secret doesn't involve Woody, though he has been arrested many times on drug charges, it involves his father. Charles Harrelson was a convicted hitman for an organized crime syndicate. That made for some awkward conversations in the early days of Woody's career, and he explains that it may be the reason why he has a deep dark side.

Fox News and political commentator, Bill O'Reilly, is known for saying things that are politically incorrect and make people very mad. Unfortunately, in his past, O'Reilly actually did some things that made people mad. O'Reilly was slapped with a sexual harassment suit in 2004 when a former Fox employee came forward with kinds of sorted details about the outspoken TV host. In the end, O'Reilly settled the case out of court, and he hoped this was one story that would just go away.

Angelina Jolie has her deep secrets, but does she know everything about hubby Brad Pitt? Openly gay soap opera star, Thom Racina needed an assistant of sorts in the mid-1980s. He put up a sign at the Screen Actor's Guild that read: "Needed: an actor to be a personal assistant. To walk the dog when he needs it. Drive the scripts to the studio, etc." Looking to building connections within Hollywood, the then struggling Brad Pitt handed his resume. "This kid shows up. He's cute, he's full of energy and says, "I'm an actor," which of course they all are in L.A. So I hired him. We became very close. He moved in with me, in the maid's room. He had his own life, and yet we became good buddies. My parents loved him, they became the new family he had away from Missouri," said Racina. Conflicting reports, including from publications such as Star Magazine, suggest both Pitt and Racina's working relationship extended far beyond his "assistant duties." I'm sure Brad omits this story every time he talks about his past to his friends.

You probably know Lee from Star Wars or The Lord Of The Rings but he is a successful actor who took a number of roles through his memorable career. Though he passed away in 2015, it doesn't mean there aren't any hidden secrets in his past. Lee was present at the last known execution by guillotine in France. In 1909, a 17-year-old Lee watched as the blade came down and beheaded convicted murderer Eugene Weidman in front of the Versailles prison.

Some of the dirty little secrets in Hollywood don't involve the celebrity directly but have something to do with their family or friends. This is the case with legendary actor Laurence Fishburne, who starred in movies like Apocolypse Now, and The Matrix series. He has taken on a lot of amazing roles during his career, and the acting bug seems to run in his family. Not in the way Laurence appreciates, however. His daughter Montana is a porn actress who Laurence is embarrassed to discuss.

Everyone knows his daughter Miley, but he has other children. In fact, he has a son as well. His name is Christopher. He's just over 20 years old and works part-time at an electronics store for less than $10 an hour. When Cyrus's then girlfriend, Tish, was pregnant with Miley Cyrus, he had a little fling with a woman by the name of Kristin Luckey, whom he impregnated. She was a waitress in South Carolina by the time her son was born on April 8, 1992. You would think she was "lucky," but as she would attest to several media outlets, Billy hasn't been a good father. He's never around, doesn't return calls. Cyrus is too busy managing Miley's career. She says that the country singer has barely helped her financially with his son and despite him having a huge career at the time, he had to be forced to start sending her monthly child support payments.

Sean Penn is a well-known actor and now a human rights activist. He is also a very divisive celebrity who most people really love or really hate. He is best known of late for a string of statements and his support of known drug cartel leaders. But in the 1980 Penn became infamous for tying up physically assaulting his then wife, Madonna. The hit singer filed several reports to the police along with photographs of her injuries documenting the ordeal. Today both Penn and Madonna have tried to bury the story by saying it was made up by gossip magazine. Despite this, several police officers on duty that night swear that they took a statement from a distraught Madonna who came in bloody and bruised. The pair divorced soon afterwards.

Best known for playing James Bond, Connery has taken on an impressive list of roles which are too many to list here. Despite his on-screen success, the actor made several comments during interviews that he wish could be put into the shredder. He is known for a few interesting interviews he gave where he shed some lightening views on domestic violence. He said that hitting a woman was 'no big deal'if she was provoking a man or not letting him get the last word in.

It's not so much a secret than it is a surprising fact. Joaquin Phoenix recently opened up about his childhood, specifically how he was raised in the Children of God cult back in the 1970s. His parents took him and his siblings on a trip throughout Central and South America with what is referred to now as a fanatic cult. The group, now known as The Family International, has been accused of many things, including charges of sexual misconduct and abuse. Phoenix says his parents eventually noticed the Children of God was not the religious group they thought they signed up for, and consequently left the cult before moving to California. Joaquin was only 6 when he signed on with a talent agency so his memory of the cult are vague.

Thora Birch has carved out a nice acting career for herself since she was a child. Her father, Jack Birch, is her manager. The thing Thora tries to keep hidden is the fact that her parents starred in one of the most popular and well known XXX films of all time, Deep Throat. Word in Hollywood is that Jack is not only overbearing but quite creepy on set, overlooking his daughter in every way possible. Why creepy? When Thora was filming a sex scene for the Winter of Frozen Dreams in 2009, Jack reportedly gave the cameraman a few pointers. Jack also gave Thora's co-star, Dean Winters the seal of approval when he was pretending to have sex with his daughter. No wonder Thora never mentions her parents past to her fans or coworkers.
