#1 A Weird Test

Susan McCann noticed her wrist had become red and irritated. She went to her doctor, who applied a watch battery to her back. When removed, the cause of the rash was revealed: Nickel.

#2 Nickel Is Everywhere

One in five Americans suffer from a nickel allergy, which kind of sucks for them because nickel is everywhere: cell phones, laptops, tablets, stainless steel, and, yes, watch batteries. It also turns up in foods like soy, cashews, and cocoa.

#3 McCann's source? Her fitness wristband.

Says dermatologist Laura Ferris, "Traditionally, we've seen nickel allergies in places like earrings or from belt buckles, but now we're tending to see it a lot on the wrist from electronic fitness trackers."

#4 What To Do?

Obviously you should try to reduce your contact with potential sources of nickel. Avoid foods that have trace amounts of it, and wear your watches and fitness bands as loosely as possible.

Also don't keep Nickels in your pocket. Funny enough, Nickels are actually mostly copper. Go figure.
