DoorDash Driver Says 11-Year-Old Carjacked Her At Gunpoint As She Made Delivery
A nurse described the terrifying experience of being carjacked at gunpoint by a youngster while working as a driver for DoorDash.
A child and a teenager approached Deon Smith, a Virginia native from Richmond, while she was making deliveries for the app in the wee hours of November 30.
The younger child, who claimed to be eleven years old, was pointing a gun at the 40-year-old nurse, who described how she instantly realized this.
Smith told WTVR: "When I was going inside I saw two kids outside. The little one approached me. I was thinking he was asking for money or something but little did I know he was pointing a gun at me asking for my keys."
Smith tried to defuse the situation, but her efforts were not successful.
She stated, describing the event as it happened: "When he told me that he was going to shoot me I was like, 'Are you serious? You want to kill somebody at your age.”
"I was asking where is your mom and why are you out here this time of night."
However, Smith fled while making the DoorDash delivery after the teenager opened the car door.
Smith said he'd yelled at the eleven-year-old to get in the vehicle.
She said: "He was telling me to get in the car, but I refused to and so they got in the car and left."
Smith found out her car had crashed one hour after she had called the police.
She said: "I had just finished paying for my car in September. In two months it was taken away from me and totaled."
Following the collision, Smith confirmed that the 11-year-old and teenager were both placed under arrest.
In a written statement, a representative for Richmond Police stated: "The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle which was later located in Henrico County, crashed in a rural area.”
"The two juvenile suspects inside the vehicle at the time of the crash were transported to local hospitals. They were released without any significant injuries and charged with robbery."
Since losing her car has made it harder for Smith to work at her normal job as a home health care nurse, her friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help her and her 10-year-old daughter.
Smith expressed gratitude for making it through the hardship and seeing her daughter again.
She said: "Just pray and ask God to protect at all costs, just to keep life, because a car can be replaced, but you cannot be."
Despite the frightening experience, Deon Smith remains resilient and supported by friends.
It's a reminder that people matter more than things, and the support of others can make a big difference in tough times.
