Elon Musk may be a millionaire and the world's richest man, but he supposedly makes his own mother sleep in a garage' when she visits.

To be honest, this could just be rich people talking.

Perhaps the 'garage' is a massive palace they have just nicknamed?

The 74-year-old has become something of a celebrity in her own right these days, and she's opened up about the 'hard times' she's been through since her divorce from Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk.

Mummy Musk recognized her son's abilities at a young age, nicknaming him "Genius Boy" and claimed that she realized he was intelligent at the age of three.

But don't all mothers think that?

Despite his fortune, she claims he is uninterested in the trappings of luxury and 'doesn't even own a home.'

“You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site,” she told The Times.

Maye attributes Elon's success to his younger brother Kimbal.

She described how the restauranteur and entrepreneur, who currently serves on both SpaceX and Tesla boards, aided Elon from the start.

She said: “In the beginning, Kimbal was with him in the first company [a web software enterprise called Zip2] and Kimbal could explain what a computer is, what’s a cursor, what’s a mouse and the background as to why the programme is so great”.

She went on to explain how his success has allowed him to ‘mix with people who are also shy.’

Maye added: “All his engineers are shy and nerdy.”

Still, there's no red carpet waiting for her when she visits him at his home in Boca Chica, where SpaceX operates.

Maye continued: “I have to sleep in the garage. You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site.”

Despite enjoying a good relationship with her wealthiest son, Maye’s advice hasn’t always been heeded.

She said: "He should do whatever he wants.
